Back to MAC Lipstick Picks!

Hey everyone!

Ever since I got into makeup 5 years back, I’ve been saving up my used/broken/expired MAC products for the Back to MAC program. This program allows you to return 6 old MAC products and get a free lipstick in exchange! I had quite a collection of old MAC products that I was no longer using and when I returned to India this month (in Japan, they only accept products purchased in Japan), I headed off to MAC to get my lipsticks.

Here’s what I picked up – Brick-o-la (a flattering mix of pink, brown and red – repurchase!), Craving (beautiful berry pink), Fast Play (nude plum/mauve) and All Fired Up (vivid magenta). All these shades are really flattering on Indian complexions in my opinion. I really wanted Mocha but it was not in stock sadly!

FOTD : Matte Red Lips

Matte Red Lips are a timeless classic and I never tire of this look! I’ve been testing out the new matte liquid lipsticks from theBalm cosmetics and I used 2 of the reds to create this look today. Keeping it simple, I used matte browns for the eyes and a soft coral blush for the cheeks. The focus remains on the rich, bold red lip. What are your thoughts on a matte red lip?

What is Strobing?

If you follow beauty trends on social media, you’d know that “strobing” is the buzzword these days. Strobing is pretty simple – just another fancy term for highlighting. It simply means focussing the light on the high points of the face i.e the cheekbones, the brow bone, the cupid’s bow and down the bridge of the nose. To achieve this, a light reflective product is used which could be in the form of a liquid, cream or powder and is applied along the aforementioned areas of the face. To create a healthy, dewy glow with an intense highlight, the products are built up in layers and blended well to achieve the desired look.

Strobing Tips, Techniques
Strobing Tips, Techniques

Here are 2 ways you can achieve this –

Tip #1 – Liquid + Powder Technique

Use a liquid highlighter like the Chambor Light and Sheer Highlighter, MAC Strobe Cream or Revlon Photoready Skinlights for the first step. Using your fingers, blend the product along the high points of the face. Make sure the product is well blended on the skin. Next, use a powder highlighter and gently sweep it with a fan brush along your cheekbones. Depending on your skin tone, you can use a champagne, pale gold or soft bronze highlighter. I quite like the Bobbi Brown Shimmer Bricks and the Revlon Colorstay Highlighting Palette. This method works best for people with normal to dry skin.

Tip #2 – Powder + Damp Sponge Technique

Use a damp sponge or Beauty Blender and use that to stipple a powder highlighter along the high points of the face. The damp sponge ensures that the product is evenly blended and you can do 2 layers to build up the intensity to get a strong highlight. This is the method I used in the image above and I used theBalm Mary-Lou Manizer to get this look! Since I have oily skin, I prefer powder highlighters to liquids and creams especially in the warmer seasons.
