Dermalogica IonActive Treatment : Review

Dermalogica Ion Active Treatment

Hi everyone! About a month back, I visited the Dermalogica offices here in Mumbai to try out their IonActive Power Treatment. If you’re not familiar with the brand, Dermalogica is a US based brand that offers targeted and effective skin care, free from common irritants and breakout causing ingredients. The brand focusses on skin health, which is why a lot of their products are recommended by dermatologists and used by professional skin therapists.

The IonActive Power Treatment is a 45-minute service that is designed to address predominant skin conditions such as acne, dehydration, sensitivity and skin ageing. It is offered exclusively at approved Dermalogica Partnered Salons/Clinics by licensed professional skin therapists. If you have serious skin concerns that your neighbourhood salon doesn’t have the expertise to address, I would recommend this treatment.

The treatment started with a consultation and Face Mapping session. In this technique, the face landscape in divided into 14 zones and each zone is analysed to determine the concerns in each area. My skin had a little bit of everything going on – from dehydration in some parts, to slight uneven-ness and serious congestion and clogged pores in the oily areas. If you’re interested to know more about face mapping, you can check out this link for more information.

The treatment is similar to a facial in its structure but the products and techniques used are more professional and result-oriented. After cleansing, exfoliation and steaming, the therapist did the most thorough extraction process on my face. She was able to extract a LOT of gunk from my very clogged skin and as a result, my skin felt unbelievably clean and soft afterwards.

The following treatments were then applied to the skin –

  • Retinol 1% IonActive – firms and reduces visible signs of skin ageing. Containing 1% microencapsulated retinol, this IonActive improves skin texture and the appearance of wrinkles, while microencapsulated Chlorella Extract contains the same proteins and amino acids found in dermal fibers, increasing collagen synthesis and improving skin firmness. This was used around the eye and lip area where first signs of ageing/lines appear.
  • Hyaluronic Acid IonActive – relieves dehydrated and/or sensitised skin with microencapsulated Na2Acetyl Glucosamine Phosphate, a building block of Hyaluronic Acid, which aids in cell regeneration and skin hydration. This also protects against external irritants such as air pollutants, and bind water into deeper layers of the epidermis. This was used in part of the forehead and cheeks where I had dehydration.
  • Niacinamide IonActive – controls and prevents adult acne. Microencapsulated Potassium Azeloyl Diglycinate, a stable derivative of Azelaic Acid, inhibits the growth of bacteria, decreases the formation of clogged pores and reduces swelling, inflammation by scavenging toxins and free radicals in the skin. Colloidal silver and Tea tree extract also act as antibacterial agents and Japanese Knotweed helps control sebum production. This was used mostly around the jawline and nose/inner cheeks where I had some breakouts and clogged pores.
  • ExoThermal Gelloid is a thermal, self-heating formula that instantly warms with the natural heat of human hands and helps penetrate actives. This formula can be optimized with use of Red LED, warm stones, warm peltier, Indirect High Frequency, and manual massage and is ideal for stressed, ageing, or dehydrated skin. This was used a massage medium as well as mask after the actives mentioned above. The massage was extremely well done and felt very relaxing. To finish off the session, a moisturizer with sun protection is applied.

Because of the extractions, my skin did feel a little red in certain areas but once the redness subsided after a day, it looked and felt amazing – super smooth and soft, very clean and fresh. The overall experience was really nice as well with all the makings of a pampering treatment – comfortable blanket, soothing instrumental music, low lighting and the expert hands of a professional therapist.

This was by far the most professional treatment I’ve experienced for my skin, and also the most thorough. Because of this, it is slightly heavy on the pocket with treatments starting Rs 4000 onwards. But for people with serious skin concerns, I think it is a worthwhile investment.

Dermalogica treatments are available at Envi Salon, Looks Salon, Toni and Guy Salon, & Silhouette Salon in Oberoi Hotels (Delhi & Mumbai).
