With increasing stressful and unhealthy lifestyles, skin-ageing is becoming a growing concern for us. The first signs of ageing can start as early as mid-20s and it is important to identify these subtle changes in our skin and take the right steps to ensure healthy, youthful looking skin. While wrinkles appear much later, dryness and dull/uneven skin are the early signs that should alert you about the changing needs of your skin. I started noticing changes in my skin when I was around 25-26. My formerly oily skin began getting more and more dry patches and while the t-zone stayed oily, I noticed longer periods of dehydration which an oil-free moisturizer just couldn’t fix. Today I’m sharing my top 5 tips that can help ease you into a beginners anti-ageing skin care routine.
Tip 1 : Switch to a gentle face wash
Harsh face washes do more harm than good and switching to a mild and gentle face wash is one of the best things you can do for your skin! I prefer using gel-based, non-foaming face washes that don’t leave my skin feeling dry and stretchy. Avoid face washes that produce too much lather and check the ingredient list. Ingredients to avoid would be Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS) and ingredients to look for would be humectants like Glycerin that help retain moisture.
Tip 2 : Anti-ageing moisturizer + Sun protection
As my skin transitions from oily to combination, finding the right kind of day moisturizer became a challenge. Most anti-ageing moisturizers felt too rich and my usual oil-free moisturizers just didn’t feel nourishing enough anymore. Apart from including an anti-ageing moisturizer in your daily morning routine, its very important to use a sunscreen as well. If you don’t step out much in the sun, the SPF and PA protection from your day cream is sufficient. But longer sun exposure demands a dedicated sunscreen as the UVA component of the sun’s rays can cause premature ageing. Make sure to choose a sunscreen texture that works for your skin. If you enjoy using it, you’re more likely to use it regularly.
Tip 3 : Weekly face massage
A regular face massage has many benefits. It boosts micro-circulation which means more oxygen and better delivery of nutrients to the skin. It can also help firm up sagging facial muscles and improve the elasticity of the skin. While regular facials at the parlor is a luxury that few of us can afford, its easy to do a facial or a simple massage at home on a weekly or fortnightly basis. Tip 4 : Dedicated Night Care Routine
By the time you enter your late-20s, its time to start being religious about your nightly skin care routine. Always cleanse your face well to remove all makeup, dirt and impurities from your skin and follow it up with a night cream. Our skin does most of its repair and rejuvenation at night time so a nutritious and moisturizing night cream is an essential for hydrated, healthy skin. Look for rich textures that moisturize your skin deeply, without leaving any dry patches unattended. You can also add a few drops of a facial oil or a natural oil like Argan Oil or Sweet Almond Oil if you have really dry skin.
A great night cream to start out with would be the Olay Total Effects 7-in-1 Anti-Ageing Night Cream, which remains one of my favorites, even after several years of experimenting with different brands. It contains Niacinamide (Vitamin B3) which is a powerful ingredient that helps erase discolorations, improves skin elasticity and dramatically enhances the barrier function of the skin. Improved barrier function means that the skin is able to retain moisture for much longer. Its also a good idea to include a serum or a facial oil as an extra-step in your nightly routine.
Tip 5 : Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!
Topical application of skin care can only go so far, its important to hydrate your skin from within to truly maintain healthy skin. Keep a water bottle with you at all times and sip throughout the day to consume your daily quota of 3 litres everyday. Every woman with great skin swears by this tip. And once you start being regular with your water intake, you will notice many other health benefits apart from just glowing skin!
