Neutrogena Makeup Remover Cleansing Towelettes (Review)

The Neutrogena Cleansing Towelettes have some pretty good reviews so I decided to give them a try when I spotted them at Walgreens during my US trip. Makeup Remover wipes always come in handy when you’re traveling and I put these to the test the same day as I bought them. The brand claims that these remove all makeup – even waterproof mascara and need no rinsing. Lets see how they fared for me.

Price : $6.49 to $8.99 (for 21 towelettes) – depending where you buy them from.

Neutrogena Makeup Remover Cleansing Towelettes Review

I picked up the regular version in the packaging that contains 21 cleansing wipes or towelettes. The first thing I noticed was that the wipes were not as wet as I had expected. I had to put slight pressure while removing my makeup to squeeze out every bit of makeup remover from them. The wipe material itself is quite soft though and doesn’t feel harsh on the skin.

Secondly, I experienced a mild stinging after using these which may be because I was rubbing these instead of wiping gently (otherwise they weren’t effective). I also experienced very mild stinging in the eyes even though they are alcohol-free and opthalmologically tested.

Thirdly, these did not remove my waterproof mascara fully and I had to use an eye makeup remover after using these to get rid of the mascara completely.

And lastly, they left a residue on my skin which definitely needed to be rinsed out. I am generally quite regular with my bedtime skin care routine but the one day I just used these wipes and fell asleep, I woke up with a couple of breakouts. This usually happens to me when I don’t remove my makeup fully before bedtime. So turns out they don’t clean face makeup 100% as well.

As you can tell by now, I am not very pleased with this product. But I do continue to use them because they are convenient especially on days when you are feeling really tired/lazy. But I have to follow up with a face wash because my skin just doesn’t feel clean with only the cleansing wipes. I haven’t used many cleansing wipes but the only one I have used apart from this is the Bourjois one almost a year back were much wetter than these and hence didn’t need to be rubbed into the skin. Not happy, would not recommend these! Nothing beats a good deep cleansing oil or balm and once you’ve used those, other means of makeup removal just don’t cut it!

Awww… i thought this might be better. I haven’t come across one makeup remover wipe that removed all my makeup and it is quite inconvenient to carry a bottle of remover where ever we go.. Nice review dear.

So true! Nothing beats a good cleansing oil/balm. I’ve used these too. Felt they could supplement but certainly wouldn’t suffice for complete makeup removal…

I am also not a big fan of make up removing wipes but in German drugstores they have some good cosmetic pads with extracts of aloe vera and honey like things which i like to use. They are quite effective and do not dry up my eyes and face.

Hi ankita…please suggest a nice cleansing oil…also do you think a cleansig oil can replace a cleanser or facewash…means i just hv to use cleansing oil in morning and evening thats all…my skin type is dry.thank you.

Hi, the MAC Cleansing Oil is really good. I'm not sure if a cleansing oil can replace a facewash. Sometimes the oils may leave a slight residue on the skin which may not feel unpleasant for dry skinned ladies but may clog pores so I think its better to follow up with a mild facewash to ensure the skin is cleansed.

Oh gosh, it’s too bad these didn’t work for you. 🙁

I sometimes use them at photo shoots as a quick makeup removal tool. I prefer Yes to Cucumbers wipes, and I can see why you wouldn’t be too happy with Neutrogena wipes. The models sometimes do have residue on their faces after using them, but I just have them wash their faces.

I agree with you Ankita. I dont like using facial wipes to clean my makeup. I love my makeup remover a lot as only they can do best.

I have heard a lot of good reviews on these wipes and had almost bought them during my US trip but missed them at last.. You are right that nothing could beat a cleansing Oil/remover but I was expecting them to fare better.. 😛

  22. February 22, 2015 / 4:07 pm

Did not think that it will be this bad as it had some good reviews 🙁

I too felt the sting on my eyes…I have experienced the same with these wipes. I returned them next day at walgreens as they take back products if not satisfactory.
