Hair Coloring Myths Busted!

Before I started coloring my hair, I had a lot of doubts and misgivings about using Hair Color. Even though I needed it to cover my white strands, I was worried that hair color might be difficult to apply at home and would damage my hair terribly. In this post, I have addressed some common myths regarding hair color ~

Hair Coloring Myths Busted

Hair Coloring Myths Busted

Myth #1 : Hair Color gives a dry, damaged look to the hair

It depends on the type of color you are using. Permanent dyes and bleach do cause visible dryness and damage but semi-permanent hair colors are much gentler on the hair and cause minimal damage. I have been using semi-permanent hair colors for a while now and my hair doesn’t look dry or damaged. But few years back when I had experimented with highlights (which was done by bleaching few section of hair), my hair did look excessively dry and straw-like. To preserve the shine and health of your hair, I would recommend going with a ammonia-free, semi-permanent hair color like the L’Oreal Paris Casting Creme Gloss.

Myth #2 : Hair Color causes premature graying of hair

This is completely false. Graying of hair is governed by genetic factors and to some extent, stress. Gray hair results due to deterioration of the pigment producing portions of the hair follicles. As we get older, the production of the type of melanin that gives a specific hair color decreases and hence hair gets lighter and more translucent with age. So all this action occurs at the hair follicles which are not affected in any way when we color our hair!

Myth #3 : Coloring hair is messy and time consuming

Hair colors have evolved majorly in the past few decades. Doing henna might be time consuming (did you know henna is really drying on the hair?) but coloring hair using hair colors is quite easy and quick. Read my post on How to color hair at home HERE to know more. It takes me under an hour to color my hair at home using a hair color kit and its quite convenient and fairly clean as well.

Myth #4 : Colored Hair looks unnatural

Some permanent dyes might give an unnatural look to the hair but semi-permanent hair colors give a very natural look to the hair.  The colorant just tints your natural hair color hence giving a hue which is a mix of your natural hair color and the colorant. The color blends into your natural hair beautifully and doesn’t give an unnatural or fake look.

I have colored my hair in shade 316 Plum of the L’Oreal Paris Casting Creme Gloss and it looks quite natural ~

You hair looks lovely Ankita! I believed in many of these myths before I went ahead and colored my hair!

Totally agree with all of your points(Yet to try point 3,but totally trying it this weekend).I have been coloring my hair from quite some time as I don’t like the effect of Henna(Mehendi) that much and I don’t see extra hairs getting greyed. I feel that if we use good quality of hair products it doesn’t dry your hair, but yes some extra care will be required as you are applying some chemicals to your hair.

Hi ankita…I do agree to some extent to your explanations for myths 2-4.. But at the same time disagree that chemical hair colors won’t damage your hair… Every brand of chemical hair color who claim that they do not have ammonia are definitely wrong..! They certainly have ammonia or some or other derivatives… N also will damage the hair in a long run…also the main drawback of chemical hair colors is that they have a chance of causing cancer..! Plz try natural colorants like henna combined with indigo for hair.. Though it takes more time n two alternate days to get it done… It will not not at all harm the hair…

Hi Ankita You look so lovely and Thanks for sharing this !!
Even I have lots of greys adn I apply henna and that is so timeconsuming. somehow have a belief that colouring makes my hair more grey. used to colour my hair using revlon top speed ammonia free one. But I thought my grey hair increased due to that and now into henna. but as u said using a good brand would work. can u tll me how long the effect of the colour lasts on hair.
please tell me whats the shade of that lippie u r wearing .

      Hi Mitha,

The effect generally stays about 1.5-2 months on my hair after which it fades slowly. I'm wearing MAC Creme in your Coffee lipstick 🙂
