L’Oreal Paris Kajal Magique : Review, Swatches

Hey everyone!

Kajals are perhaps the single most popular selling makeup product in India and the brands know it! There have been loads of kajal launches in the recent months and one of them is by L’Oreal – the Kajal Magique. Here are my thoughts on this and how it compares to the other affordable kajals in the market –

Price : Rs 245

My take on the Product

The reigning affordable kajals in the market are Maybelline Colossal and Lakme Eyeconic. It seems like L’Oreal wanted to position one of its own in the same price bracket with Kajal Magique. Having used both Maybelline Colossala and Lakme Eyeconic, I can say the Kajal Magique does not compare to either – in terms of texture, pigmentation or longevity!

I like the black and hot pink twist up packaging but the fondness ends there. It doesn’t feel smooth, the pigmentation is weak and you need several swipes to get a decently black color. Even with a lot of tugging and layering, it doesn’t give a very rich black color that we have come to love in other brands. L’Oreal claims that it can be used on the lower lash line as well as the upper lash line. The one claim it does to seem to fulfill is that it is smudge-proof. On the upper lash line as liner, it doesn’t budge or transfer to the socket line. I would have liked wearing this as liner if it was just a little smoother and blacker. On the waterline though, it looks sheer and begins fading after a mere 3 hours of wear. The saving grace is that it doesn’t bleed or give you panda eyes. Overall, this was a complete dud for me. I like my kajals/liners to be smooth and rich black. I’ll be sticking to my Lakme Eyeconic!

Overall Verdict

The L’Oreal Paris Kajal Magique was a big disappointment for me. The texture was dry/stiff, the pigmentation was weak and I had to layer it several times to get a decent black color. The only saving grace is that it doesn’t smudge or give you panda eyes. I personally prefer softer, richer kajals and this one is just not worth buying when there are some great kajals like Lakme Eyeconic and Maybelline Colossal in the market already.

I've heard great reviews though never tried it myself! Have you tried Lakme Absolute Ultimate Kohl?

  4. May 5, 2014 / 1:15 pm

Same my thoughts, I don’t like this kajal at all and loved that your review is honest despite this being a press sample and I have been reading all such good reviews by many bloggers out there just because it was sent by the brand to them, that’s why they misguide the readers.

    • May 6, 2014 / 9:56 am

I'd read plenty of good reviews too. I've even read magazine interviews of Celebrity Makeup artists recommending this! :

  5. May 5, 2014 / 1:19 pm

Recently my parents came to Japan, I asked them to bring this useless thing for me, regret why I did so, should have asked for Colossal instead 🙁

    • May 6, 2014 / 9:57 am

Aww that's too bad! Colossal and Eyeconic are way better!

  6. May 5, 2014 / 1:19 pm

Yes I agree with the review 🙂 Needs a lot of layering to show black…

  7. May 5, 2014 / 2:05 pm

Ever since I switched to Nars Long wear eye pencils, nothing else is good enough!

    • May 6, 2014 / 9:57 am

Ohh I haven't tried the NARS Long wear pencils! Will check them out next time I visit the NARS counter!

  8. May 5, 2014 / 2:29 pm

Dont like it.. Lakme Eye conic still remains my favourite.

Disappointed me too!! N I thought I was the only one thinking this way coz this suits my sister pretty well..doesnt stay on my waterline at all..n its soo light in colour…m back to my beloved colossal, eyeconic and even lotus herbala natural kajal, which is faaar better than this dud L’oreal has introduced… 🙁

    • May 6, 2014 / 9:58 am

I'm glad I'm not the only one who didn't like this! I was wondering if I'd got a bad piece or something, many people seemed to like this :

Ohh noo such a dud at this price :/…I felt really exited when it launched and seeing aishwariya in the add… her eyes look so pretty bt it's not the same in reality..my fav kajal will always be lakme eyeconic cheaper than this but much better.. 😀

  11. May 5, 2014 / 3:58 pm

I hate it when kajal is not as dark as it actually should be. Thankx for the honest review.

its not that much supreme black which it claims…i love my lakme eyeconic.

  13. May 5, 2014 / 6:28 pm

What a shame. I expected better from L’Oreal.

    • May 6, 2014 / 7:15 pm

Its sad, one of their rare India exclusive products turned out such a dud!

my all tym fav- colossal and eyeconic.. I hv heard many bad reviews for loreal one so never dared to try it

  15. May 5, 2014 / 6:49 pm

I was looking forward to trying it, but I guess I will have to pass!

Thanks Ankita, but I just wish if you would have posted this review a few days earlier.
I recently lost my eyeconic kajal, which I was totally satisfied with. However being the innovative consumer that I am, I purchased the Loreal variant, hoping that it would live up to the brand name. I am furious for this thing is utterly useless and has affected my faith in this company’s products.
I feel like I have fallen prey to the on going ‘kajal marketing Wars’

what a waste of money :'(

P.S : you are doing a great job

    • May 6, 2014 / 9:59 am

Ohh too bad! I generally like L'Oreal products especially their recent lip launches – Shine Caresse, Rouge Caresse, Moist Matte have all been spectacular. This one was a complete fail!

  17. May 5, 2014 / 9:01 pm

i too have similar thoughts on this one

Aishwarya looks really pretty in the ad, though. 😀

That she does. But there's always photoshop! 😛

thanks for the review Ankita….i was thinking to try it out but not anymore… 🙂

  21. May 6, 2014 / 9:59 am

Thanks you saved my 245 bucks!!!!
I was about buy this in my next kajal purchase.
I have been a loyal user of streetwear Kajal since last 7-8 years and i still could not find a better replacement.

    • May 6, 2014 / 10:54 am

You're welcome! Have you tried Lakme Eyeconic or Maybelline Colossal Megha?

      • May 7, 2014 / 6:20 pm

I have not tried any one of them as i am loyal user of Street wear till now and dare not using other till i get better reviews

  22. May 6, 2014 / 12:22 pm

Even i felt the same regarding the pigmentation. But i quite like it for lining my lower lash-line precisely and for tight lining. 🙂 ur EOTD looks super pretty as always

  23. May 6, 2014 / 1:04 pm

This is a major dud for mee too.. was hyper-excited to try it.. the reality was a disaster. i have a tad oily lid.. literally scraped the skin off still didnt get wearable result. Eyeconic works good for me… but Faces Long Wear Eye Pencil in Solid Black is very good too.. gives a deep gel-liner finish. only pain is sharpening.. so.. overall, Eyeconic gets the trophy!

I am looking for an alternative economical kajal. I use Revlon colorstay one stroke defining eyeliner blackest black. Most of the kajal do not stay put on my eyes for long. They smudge a lot. It’s sad that this Kajal turned out to be dud. Since I read above comments commending Eyeconic and Colossal I want to buy one of them. I just basically want my kajal to smudge less. So, can you suggest which one should I go for – Eyeconic or Colossal?

    • May 6, 2014 / 3:32 pm

Hi Madhur, both Eyeconic and Colossal perform similarly on me. If you're willing to spend a little more, Lakme Absolute Kohl Ultimate is great – doesn't smudge at all and is quite dark black as well.

      • Madhur
        May 6, 2014 / 5:53 pm

I also thought the same. I heard great reviews about Absolute. I am going to buy it then and skip Eyeconic and Colossal. Though I am happy with Revlon kajal but it gets boring to pick up the same single black kajal every time. I believe in variety. 😀

    May 6, 2014 / 3:42 pm

I woulds say try Rimmel exaggerate twist up eyeliner in shade NOIR… you will love the.. availability is an issue in India as this shade is always out of stock online 🙁

    • Madhur
      May 6, 2014 / 5:59 pm

Thank you Nita. 🙂 I will look for it as well. I searched this eyeliner online and it have good reviews too. Price is affordable and it is Dermatologist & ophthalmologist tested. Nykaa have it but they are out of stock for Noir. I guess I will check it out in Parcos.

    • May 6, 2014 / 7:13 pm

Thanks Nita! I'll see if I can spot it here in Japan, it sounds good!

    May 6, 2014 / 3:45 pm

thank god !i was about to buy loreal magique but finally bought eyeconic 🙂

  27. May 7, 2014 / 8:29 am

I know I might be a odd one out here Ankita 🙁
but I kind of like this …and Ya i never got PR sample 🙂
I have used colossal too in the past ….I agree pigmentation is poor but Im able to work on this and it glides smoothly on my eyes 🙂
But yes I have tried better eyeliners for sure ….for ex UD liners which I have been using for the past month are the best eyeliner in the world …have u tried UD 24/7 liners ? u must try
I know it can be compare to Loreal but since we are talking abt eyeliners its worth the mention 😛

colossal is my fav…i m yet 2 try lakme eyeconic..

  29. May 10, 2014 / 12:25 am

It gave me quite decent pigmentation surprisingly… It takes a few swipes but I got a good black colour, Not as dark as the Lakme Absolute Kohl, but good enough nevertheless.
