I’ve been raving about the Bourjois Happy Light foundation in the past few days and today I have the Matte primer from the same range up for review. Is it as good as the foundation? Read on to find out!
Price : Rs 915 for 15 ml
What the brand claims :
- Mattifies the complexion in any light
- Airbrush action, minimised pores
- Ideal for Normal to combination skin
- Light weight serum texture -> velvety soft skin
- Non occlusive, non comodogenic formula
- Non drying. Dermatologically tested
My take on the Product
The primer comes in a packaging similar to the Happy light foundation – simple, convenient pump dispenser bottle. I love the peach tint of the product and the pump! The bottle size is slightly smaller than the foundation bottle though it contains only half the amount of product (15 ml). Like the name suggests, the primer has a very light serum-like texture. Its non-greasy and easily absorbed into the skin. It gives a matte finish once blended in and as claimed, does give a slightly smoother look to the skin. But the weird thing about the texture is that if you over blend, it starts peeling off the skin in small rolls. So you have to be careful to pat the product in very lightly instead of rubbing or massaging it into the skin. I find this really annoying about the texture!
As far as extending the wear of makeup or oil control goes, it doesn’t really do much for me. I tested this by wearing this under foundation only on 1 side of the face and at the end of the day, it didn’t really keep the oiliness in the T-zone at bay. The only thing that it did do for me slightly minimize the look of open pores. Which the Happy light foundation does anyway so if you’re planning on picking the foundation, you can skip this.
I wear primers for 2 reasons – to keep my foundation melting off my oily skin and to give a smoother, more perfected look to the skin. While this one does help a little with the latter, it doesn’t really help with oil control which I really need. I feel there are better primers out there – L’Oreal Paris Base Magique and Colorbar Perfect match being the ones that I generally use and recommend.
While the Happy Light foundation was a sure winner for me, this one falls in the just-okay category. The only people I would recommend it to are those who are allergic to dimethicone or methicone (silicones) that most primers tend to contain. I don’t see it listed in the ingredient list and the texture also doesn’t have the slippery, silky feel that silicone containing products have. It does however list silica as one of the ingredients which is an absorbent and is supposed to help with oil/sweat absorption.
The GOOD about Bourjois Happy Light Matte Serum Primer :
- Easy to use pump packaging
- Light weight, non greasy texture
- Easily absorbed into the skin
- Gives a soft matte finish on absorbing
- Smoothens out skin texture [to an extent]
- Does not contain silicones
- Has a soft floral scent [may be a con for some]
The NOT-SO-GOOD about Bourjois Happy Light Matte Serum Primer :
- Over blending causes it to peel off in rolls
- Doesn’t give much oil control over the course of few hours
The Bourjois Happy Light Matte Serum primer is a light-weight, non-greasy primer that softens the look of imperfections to some extent but doesn’t really give great oil control or mattifying action through the day. While I like the light texture and the fact that people allergic to silicones can easily use this, it doesn’t do a LOT for my skin and I feel I can find more effective primers for a lesser price. Loved the Happy Light foundation but the primer was disappointing!
