My Take on the Product

The Bourjois Happy Light foundation comes in a simple and convenient pump dispenser packaging. The texture is really easy to work with – its not thick, its not runny either. It feels quite non-greasy and really light weight on the skin. It blends easily and sinks in completely. The finish is very skin-like, nearly matte but not dry. It gives light to medium (buildable) coverage and really smoothens out imperfections giving a flawless and poreless look to the skin. I think the silicones are responsible for that (as well as its good performance on oily skin). I like that its not a very pigmented foundation. You don’t end up with a cakey face with a foundation that’s not very pigmented. I need about 2 pumps to do my entire face and neck. With fingers, it gives a Tinted moisturizer type coverage but with a foundation brush, it gives medium coverage.

The glow is very natural and beautiful – the kind that’ll get you compliments on your skin and not on the makeup you’re wearing! It contains translucent pigments that are responsible for the boost of freshness and glow it gives to the skin (which I prefer any day over shimmer particles in a foundation). Do note that if you have pigmentation that requires moderate to heavy coverage, you need a concealer for that because this just evens out skin tone and covers up uneven-ness but not spots and under eye shadows.

It claims 8 hours hydration. I don’t have dehydrated skin but when I’ve worn this over the entire day, my skin looks and feels fresh by the end of the day so it probably does hydrate well. Otherwise foundations can sometimes make the skin a little stretchy and patchy after a day’s wear. But if you have dry patches, you would need a good moisturizer underneath because the texture is not very dewy.

Because its not very heavy coverage, it looks very natural and weight less on the skin. It doesn’t wear off with sweat but does break down a bit with the natural oils of the skin. My skin is normal right now with an oily T-zone and I required blotting/touch up on the oily areas after 3-4 hours of wear. But apart from that it wore decently well. It did not oxidize on my skin over the course of the 12-13 hours I’ve been wearing it. 50% of the foundation generally faded after 12 hours of wear but my skin still looked fairly fresh.

I wear shade #52 Light Beige and it suits my complexion perfectly. For your reference, I wear MAC Matchmaster #3, Face and Body C4 and Clinique Superbalanced #5.

The NOT-SO-GOOD about Bourjois Happy Light Foundation :

Overall Verdict

Overall, I really liked this foundation because it gave a very glowing, beautiful finish to my skin while evening out uneven tone and texture. It doesn’t give heavy duty coverage but unless you have really problematic skin, you don’t need that all over the face anyway.  It looked great in pictures and wore quite well on my normal to oily skin over the course of the day. I also like the mild floral scent it has (similar to other Bourjois foundations). Its pricey but I feel its worth it. I was a sent the product for review but if I’d tried out a sample of this, I would have bought it!

Unless you have really troublesome/spotty skin that needs a lot of coverage, I’d highly recommend this foundation! This definitely makes it to my favorite foundations list!

Rating : 4.8/5

  3. so this is the secret behind ur flawless skin in this look…was thinking of buying a Foundation which could giv me dewy finish…wat do u suggest this one or MAC foundations or any othre….

  4. hey ankita!………what foundation would u recommend for someone with redness and some off n on pimple scars……Bourjois Happy Light or Bourjois Healthy mix?

  5. Hey ankita,
I love your blog. It is so helpful especially for someone like me (read: just started using makeup).
I bought my first foundation after reading the reviews for happy light foundation. I wanted very light coverage as my skin is pretty well behaved. The shade #53 matched perfectly to my skin and look amazing in the store. (I even went and checked outside in the daylight), but when I tried it at home, after sometime it made my face look darker. I have normal skin with oily t-zone.
Should I change the shade to a lighter one or get another one? I called up the store and they can exchange it for me. Can you please suggest a solution? Or should I try using a primer?

It’s so overwhelming to shop for makeup!!! *phew*

  6. Can you please guide , Is this foundation better than MAC , as there is not much of a price difference.
Also which lipstick are you wearing here

    1. Hi Ruchi, MAC has many different foundations and it depends on what you want. This foundation is excellent if you want a light coverage and luminous. If you want a little more coverage, try MAC Matchmaster or MAC Studio Fix Fluid or Studio Sculpt (for drier skin). The MAC foundation that comes closest to this in terms of consistency and coverage is MAC Face and Body Foundation – similar thin watery texture and light coverage with dewy finish. I personally prefer Bourjois Happy light as it gives more glow and luminosity than MAC Face and Body.

    2. As for the lipstick, I've done a mix of shades to create the 2-tone look. Please follow the link given in the blog post to see the list of products used to create the look.

        1. Hey ankita i got this . They have matched me with shade 53 , which is quite similar to my actual skin tone and does not look like i am putting anything. Is this match ok , or should i get a shade lighter for more brighter skin

          1. If 53 matches perfectly with your skin, go with it. Do test it again to make sure it doesn't get darker or oxidise to an orange/dark tone in a few hours just to make sure it works perfectly for you.

  7. Hey,

I love your reviews. I am relatively new to your blog and have read all your posts in the last few days. Please tell me where can I find this foundation in Delhi??
