What Lakme says about Gel Stylist :

Nails are fast becoming the next big beauty accessory for today’s fashionable woman who seeks professional and salon based expertise to achieve highly styled nails. Inspired by this insight, the breakthrough Lakmé Absolute Gel Stylist range packs the performance of a gel manicure in a bottle to ensure glossy and plump nails in a single stroke.

This break-through product range aims to introduce the global trend of gel based manicures in the country. It comes with a highly pigmented colour formula to ensure super glossy and plump nails. A singular simple stroke delivers rich colour and a high gloss finish that stays for long. The Absolute Gel Stylist comes in exciting shades ranging from tomato tang, coral flush to nudes like nude glow and caramel melt. The range is your very own manicurist in a bottle giving you an unmatchable shine and the most perfectly styled nails.

My take on the Product

I’ve never got gel nails done myself but I’ve seen them on other people. They are basically a thick layer of gel nail paint over the natural nail – cured by UV light (or water) that give long lasting, highly glossy, low maintenance nail color to the nails. While they last for a long time (generally 3-5 weeks), the downsides are that they are difficult to remove, expensive and increase the risk for skin cancer (in case of the UV cured ones).

When Lakme launched the Absolute Gel Stylist, I was quite intrigued by the product because it was for the first of its kind in India. After trying out the nail paint however, I’m not too impressed. What I was expecting was something superior to a regular good nail paint – glossier texture and long stay color/finish. It basically turns out to be just a good nail paint – slightly glossier and smoother as far as appearance goes but the glossy finish becomes dull within 3-4 days and it starts wearing off from the nail tip within the week.

I like the big bottle it comes in – but I was surprised that it contains only 3.6 g of product! The brush is on the larger side and the shape/size is quite convenient and easy to use. I liked the slightly thick, nearly opaque (in single coat) texture. I applied 2 coats to get glossy, fully opaque coverage and I quite liked how it looked freshly applied on my nails. It wasn’t very quick to dry however, I got fabric impressions all over so I’d suggest giving it an hour to dry completely. So far, it didn’t feel very different from any other good nail paint. I tested this nail paint with and without a base coat and it fared slightly better with a base coat underneath. At the end of my 8 day testing period, I was quite disappointed with how dull the finish had become. There was also a significantly noticeable chip on the nail of my middle finger (without base coat). I’ve included a picture of how it looks on my nails after 8 days of wear.

Is it better than regular nail paint? Slightly but its not outstanding- there is only nail tip wear and no big chipping. I generally get more chipping from most nail paints once I do housework like dishes etc. but this one endured that decently well. The finish however had become quite dull, that’s where I was disappointed. Is it worth Rs 400? Not for me. I for one won’t be indulging any more in this range. The only advantage that this product could have given was superior wear without the dull finish but I feel I can get the same performance if I use a base coat and top coat with decent polishes from Colorbar/L’Oreal as well!

Lastly, I don’t think this comes close to actual ‘Gel Nails’.

The GOOD about Lakme Absolute Gel Stylist Nail Paint Scarlet Red :

  1. Sturdy, big bottle
  2. Large brush – easy to use
  3. Gives a highly glossy ‘gel-like’ finish (freshly applied)
  4. Wears decently wear – only minor chipping

The NOT-SO-GOOD about Lakme Absolute Gel Stylist Nail Paint Scarlet Red :

  1. Finish becomes dull in 3-4 days
  2. Not like actual gel nails
  3. Not quick dry
  4. Only 3.6 g for Rs 400

Overall Verdict

Lakme Absolute Gel Stylist is a slightly superior (and glorified!) nail paint. It has a nice, workable texture and gives glossy, opaque color in 2 coats but the finish gets dull within 3-4 days of wear. There is minor tip wear within the week – fares *slightly* better than regular, cheaper nail paints but not significantly so. Gel nails actually last 3-5 weeks and I don’t think this Gel Stylist gives the performance of an actual gel manicure. Lastly, one gets a  small quantity – only 3.6 g for Rs 400.

Had this been marketed as just a nail paint, I would have felt differently about it. But I judged it a little more critically since its marketed as Gel manicure that gives the same performance as actual gel nails.

Rating : 3/5

  1. hey u’ve written the wrong price above the 1st pic 🙂
n i tried them at a lakme counter n didnt feel theyre the worth the price , we can get better stuff from colorbar at the price, but the shade looks gorgeous on ur nails ! 🙂

  2. omg….i also bought one yesterday…in coral color…same review from my side also…i was too expecting something good…but its not at all…even when u apply 1st coat,it look like normal polish only…:((((((((color is too good..but again its not a quick dry…:((((((

  3. I don’t understand why cosmetic products are so expensive in India. In Singapore you can get similar nail shade probably for 3.00 SGD which is like RS.150 for branded stuff. I find Lakme way expensive compare to some on International brands. This one definitely not for me!

  4. You know Lakme might claim to the first, but these Gel Nail paints are also available at Deborah Milano…I got one of those and surely I think these are over-hyped…
Nonetheless, the shade looks great on your nails Ankita 🙂

  5. Yours looks glossier than mine did…didnt find anything “gel” related in it. Just a marketing gimmick. I have big issues with my paints drying and since I dont have the patience to sit still while they dry almost always end up ruining them. OPI has a oil and spray which helps the paint to set faster.

Spray is expensive but right now Im hooked to it. Some paints set immediately while others take a considerable lesser time.

  6. Omg at the ‘after 8 days of wear’ pic! I can’t believe they charged 400 bucks for that :/ thanks for the review 🙂

  7. Try loreal gel nailpaint maybe ? Yeah stuff in india is way too pricey. MUA blush which is like 1 pound abroad , is 700 whaaa-why-how-on-earth rupees here. -_- Its like their drugstore is our high end lol 😛

  8. thanks ankita..had been waiting for this review! lakme launches very good shades in nailpaints but they have terrible drying n staying power!

  9. It is better to use an OPI or China Glaze than invest on false promises. So sorry for you ankita. I was about to invest in one when I read these reviews. I am not buying one now 🙂

  10. My first thought…Pricey!
I don’t think I would pay that much for a nail paint, espi if it isnt a high end brand.
I had high expectations from this product. But its good to see
Lakme getting in the game and bringing such products into India 🙂

  11. Thanks!i am a nail technician and i wanted to try out the gel polish of lakme but its good that i have read the review.if its really a gel polish then it should last for atleast a month, thats what gel nails are all about.

  12. I have a hard time believing that Rs. 400 thing is gel polish. Unlike the other gel polishes I’ve used (OPI, Gelish) this one takes forever to dry, even under the UV lamps. And then it starts chipping off within a week without any rigorous use of hands, which gel polish should not be doing. And it is SO difficult to get it off! I had to go to a salon since my pure acetone wouldn’t work, ad even the technician had a hard time getting it off. And all this, in spite of using a Gelish top and base coat. This is the first Lakmé product that I’m really disappointed in.

  13. oh crap..!! i just bought one.. 🙁 i should have read the reviews first.. though i got it for Rs. 300 on nykaa coz of the 25% sale… but still… 300!!!!!!!!!!!!
di it requires uv lamp as well to get dry????? or it will dry like this only.. and it would go ok with normal top coat.?? any idea.. :p
