My take on the Product

As you can see from the pictures, the product comes in a twist up stick packaging which I find very convenient to use. The color scheme of the BB stick is same as the Indian BB cream – pale turquoise blue with metallic onion pink motif. I have the Malaysian version of the BB cream which is much plainer in packaging compared to the Indian version. The plastic packaging is quite light weight and sturdy and tiny enough to slip into the smallest of purses!

The texture of the product is quite soft and smooth – it glides onto the skin without any tugging or pulling. It gives pretty good coverage with a small amount of product – almost as good as a medium coverage foundation. I do not need an extra concealer when I’m using this. It can be layered to build up coverage in areas that need some extra attention. It is super easy to blend – just a few dabs of fingers is enough to smoothen it out. Convenience of use aside, what makes this a star product for me is that is actually diminishes the appearance of pores and imperfections to give a very smooth, flawless look! As far as the claim of brightening is concerned, it does add a soft glow to the face. Despite the fact that the shade is slightly dark for me, my skin looks fresh though a bit tanned when I apply this.

The finish is semi-matte and since its already pretty hot in Mumbai, I cannot get away without powder. After powdering, it does keep my face shine free for about 4-5 hours after which my T-zone acquires a bit of shine. But it doesn’t make my skin oily. I’ve been out in the afternoons wearing this and it doesn’t melt off the skin. I’ve worn it for about 8 hours at a stretch and it wore pretty well. I needed to blot my nose after 5 hours of wear but apart from that, the wear was stellar! Despite being mattifying, it doesn’t make the skin dry or stretchy, the skin feels velvety soft even in the troublesome dry areas (my nose)after a day’s wear. It claims to have Salicyclic acid for treating breakouts but I haven’t noticed any change in a breakout on my chin in 3 days. I’m guessing the concentration might be too low for treating large pimples.

The formula contains SPF 21 AND PA+++ so you can skip your sunscreen. Most foundations/TMs offer some SPF but rarely does a product come with SPF and UVA protection. This is what really makes it a multi-tasker!

I’ve tried the BB cream and liked it though it doesn’t wear well on my oily skin in hot weather and gives lesser coverage. The BB stick however addresses all these concerns. I think its a MUST-HAVE for summers! Its best suited for oily skin but I think if you moisturize well before application, it can work just as well for other skin types. I have some dry patches around my nose at the moment and it did not emphasize them or make them drier. In this price range, I think this is perhaps the best product I’ve tried. I expected it to be similar to the Lotus Herbals Naturalblend Swift makeup but it is much much better!

So far you can see I’m absolutely smitten by the product but here comes the downside. Its available only in 2 shades. I was sent a sample (Fawn – the darker shade) by the PR and its a tad darker for my skin. Radiance (the lighter shade) might be perhaps too light for me. Fawn does work for me, it doesn’t make me look dull, just a little tanned but a medium shade is definitely needed in this range! I hope Maybelline is listening! Its such a spectacular product otherwise, I hate taking away points for this drawback!

Fawn is exactly the shade of my arm which is a shade darker than my face, you can see it vanishes once blended -

The GOOD about Maybelline Clearglow Shine free BB Stick :

  1. Convenient, sturdy packaging
  2. Smooth texture
  3. Does not tug at the skin
  4. Does not emphasize dryness ; makes the skin soft
  5. Blends easily and seamlessly
  6. Gives medium coverage ; can be layered
  7. Brightens skin ; evens out skin tone
  8. Diminishes pores and imperfections
  9. Controls oil
  10. Wears well
  11. Doesn’t melt off the skin in hot weather
  12. Contains UVA and UVB protection
  13. Affordably priced!

The NOT-SO-GOOD about Maybelline Clearglow Shine free BB Stick :

  1. Only 2 shades available

Overall Verdict

Maybelline Clearglow Shine free BB Stick does pretty much all it claims – its conceals, brightens, evens out skin tone and gives a flawless smooth look to the face. It is easy to use, blends seamlessly and offers protection against UVA and UVB rays. The coverage is about medium but can be layered to get better concealing. I am blown over by how good this is and despite the shade mismatch, how well it wears on my combination skin. I wish Maybelline introduces a Medium shade, I hate to take away points for shade limitation! I think this is MUST-HAVE for Summers!

Rating : 4.75/5

hehe…I stay in Mlore too!!! They never know anything about make-up here!!! If you ask brown lipstick they show you pink lipstick! SAs in Blore re much better. Just ask the fat lady in NewU, she ll know when the new stock arrives there even though she wont know what products & its waste giving your number, they never call. Rest ll ve no idea!

i really like their cream….it doesnt feel heavy at all. but stick would be good to carry along… i think fawn would match my complexion.

Reply
Corallista said on 08-03-2013

If you have dry skin you can stick to the cream. The stick would be better for touch ups/oily skin.

Hey..
Sorry for the dumb ass query but is a primer needed before this and if so, can u pl suggest one? n if i need more SPF, do i use a sunscreen below? mine is an oily, acne prone skin with dark spots and blemishes. So for everyday make up I’ll need what…a moisturiser, primer, sunscreen n then this (or any foundation) :-/??

Reply
Corallista said on 15-03-2013

Hey, I don’t think you need a primer underneath this because it stays long and minimizes imperfections – 2 things primers are required for. For everyday makeup, you need this along with a powder on top. If you are not exposed to the sun for very long everyday, you can skip sunscreen too. Apply oil free moisturizer, sunscreen (optional) and then the BB stick. Add some compact powder on top using a fluffy brush to set the BB stick.

Very helpful review, hoping to by one asap. How do you apply it? Do you apply it all over your face? What else did you put on the face along with this, to get the complete look?

Reply
Corallista said on 15-03-2013

Hey Fari, sorry for the late reply. You swipe the stick on your face – 3 swiped on the cheeks to the jawline, one on the chin, one across forehead and along the nose. Then use your fingers to blend it till you get a uniform finish. I applied Maybelline Dream matte powder all over the face and Clarins Blush Prodige 02 on the cheeks.

Reply
Corallista said on 15-03-2013

The SPF 21 will protect you from about 2-2.5 hours of sun. If you’re going to be in the sun for more than 2 hours, do wear a sunscreen underneath.
