Hey everyone!

Today I’m reviewing a fabulous long stay concealer from MAC – the Pro Longwear concealer in shade NC42.

What MAC says about the Product :

A lightweight fluid concealer that provides medium to full coverage with a comfortable, natural matte finish. Colour-true formula lasts up to 15 hours. Helps conceal and correct the look of under-eye circles, and discolorations. Comes in a clear glass vial with a matte black pump.

My take on the Product

MAC gives a pretty accurate summary of the product. The product comes in a glass vial with a pump dispenser. Much as I like this product, the packaging is terrible. It is fairly sturdy and doesn’t leak or anything but the pump dispenses way too much product! Considering that this is a high coverage concealer and the tiniest amount is needed for the eyes, the pump dispenses one giant drop of it even when I am very careful to use very little pressure and don’t dispense the pump all the way down. As a result, I end up wasting product every time I use it. I wish it came with a doe foot applicator instead like the Select Moisture Cover or a simple squeeze tube like the Select Cover up.

The texture is fluid, its slightly runny but not overly so. A small amount of product gives plenty of coverage (medium to full) and it dries down to a matte finish. Once ‘set’ it doesn’t budge and stays put for an easy 12 hours. Every time I use this, I’m amazed by how little I need to cover up my eye area (lid+ under eye) as well as discolorations around the face – nose, mouth, blemishes. It blends with little effort and I generally use either my fingers or a MAC 217 brush to apply this. Since I use concealer on the eye lid most times, I’m really happy that the formula is matte and not creamy. Creamy concealers cause premature creasing of eye shadows.

The only downside of the formula is that its quite drying and has a matte finish. So while it is long lasting, it might not be the best choice for those with a lot of dryness OR a lot of lines/wrinkles. I’ve noticed that it can settle a little bit onto lines (I have a few near the inner corner) especially if the eye area is dry. The good thing though is that it settles into lines as soon as you apply it IF there is a lot of dryness and if it doesn’t crease then, you can be sure it won’t crease or budge at all few hours afterwards.

Since it dries down to a matte, budge proof finish, you don’t necessarily need to powder on top to set it but its always a good idea to lightly set it with powder. Since its nearly waterproof, you need an cream/oil based product or an eye makeup remover to remove it.

If you’re someone with oily eye area and heavy pigmentation, you would really like this one. If you’re someone prone to a lot of dryness or have a lot of wrinkles/lines around the eyes, I won’t recommend this for you.

Shades :

The website shows 15 shades, I’m not sure how many are available in India but I’m guessing at least 9 of them are. I was matched with the shade NC42 which is absolutely perfect for me! It is yellow toned, doesn’t have much orangey tones which is what I need. I have moderate under eye pigmentation and while just foundation takes care of that about 60-70%, the use of concealer gives that perfectly flawless look. It brightens up my eye area quite nicely and works great over spots/blemishes as well.

I’ve also used it in the FOTD below :

Left – Only Tinted Moisturizer

Right – TM + MAC Pro Long wear concealer (under eyes, around nose/mouth/jawline)

I feel everyone should invest in a good concealer. It might not be a very attractive and appealing product but it makes a HUGE difference to the overall look! The most important thing about a concealer is that it should match your skin tone, otherwise the whole purpose of using it is defeated! Sometimes slight mismatch in tone can be corrected by layering foundation over it but not always.

The GOOD about MAC Pro Longwear Concealer :

  1. Transparent packaging
  2. Light fluid texture
  3. Very easy to blend
  4. Gives medium to full coverage
  5. Natural matte finish
  6. A little amount goes a long way
  7. Long stay
  8. Does not crease or budge after application

The NOT-SO-GOOD about MAC Pro Longwear Concealer :

  1. May enhance dryness/fine lines if used on unmoisturized skin
  2. Pump dispenses too much product – leads to wastage

Overall Verdict

This is perhaps the best concealer I’ve used so far – the terrible packaging aside. The fluid formula gives excellent coverage and sets into a budge proof finish post application. A small amount goes a long way and it is very easy to blend as well. Women prone to dryness around the eyes may not find this the best finish for them but it does work if you moisturize before application. NC42 is the perfect match for me and I would have happily given it a 5/5 if the packaging didn’t lead to so much wastage!

Rating : 4.5/5

    1. Hi Rashmi, I’ve tried stick concealers as well as liquid ones. MAC Pro longwear gives excellent coverage the matte finish is an added advantage. In the past, I’ve liked Colorbar Instant cover up stick as well.

  1. this is the best concealer for me too ankita..i also use nc42 only..n it hides even scars very well..i use select cover up also wen i don need much coverage..but porlongwear is a magic

  2. Hi Ankita, you are my encyclopedia for beauty/makeup products.I just wanted to take your opinion/suggestion for my problem. I have oily skin on my face so I use a primer daily to office. Is there any moisturizer and foundation which I can use avoiding the primer since my makeup is fully dependent on primer now. I have to stay in office in AC for around 8-9 hours but travel for one hour in the hot humid Chennai climate. Could you please help me?

    1. Thank you Nisha 🙂 There is no harm in using a primer everyday – its just an added step. But if you want to skip that extra step, you could try something like Lakme Absolute Mattreal Mousse – it contains silicones which is one of the ingredients in most primers. It controls oil and wears quite long. I’ve also found that mixing Clinique Moisture Surge gel cream keeps my skin hydrated and there is lesser oil production along the T-zone. You could also try MAC Oil control lotion – just mix it a little bit in your foundation or apply it on the oily regions before foundation. And don’t forget to powder your face properly. Keep a face mist like The Body Shop Vitamin E face mist in office as the AC tends to dehydrate the skin and spritz it on your face every couple of hours.

      1. That’s a wonderful suggestion Ankita. thank you so much. I will definitely try this one. I was actually wondering how to use MAC oil control lotion. Now from your reply I got it. Thanks a lot.

  3. As you said it makes a lot of difference to the overall look.. I never tried or used a concealer as I always thought the foundation takes care of all the coverage I need but now I seriously want to try a concealer 🙂

  4. thanks for this review ankita! i always wanted to buy this. last time i went to select citywalk, the mua matched NW30 for me. i wasnt sure abt the shade and the store lighting is always misleading.. can u suggest me better way of choosing a concealer?

  5. Thanks Ankita! I have been looking for a good concealer for some time now… Anything n everything I have tried makes they under eye area grey rather than covering it! Will definitely give this one a shot!

  6. Hey ankita, i’ve dry skin and i’ve fine line under eye area with dark circle so which concealer i should have to use??plz reply

    1. Hi Harsha, I'd recommend one of the more moisturizing formulas from MAC – like the Select Moisture Cover or the Select Cover up. If you have severe dark circles, using a corrector like the Clinique Even Better concealer in Orange brightener under the concealer will help.

          1. You'll have to visit the MAC store to find the shade match for you Harsha. Ask the store staff to help you find a shade in both Select Moisture Cover and Select Cover Up (Select Cover up has more coverage and Select Moisture Cover moisturizes more but covers a bit lesser). Ask them to apply one on each side of the face and you can compare and see which one looks better on you, go for the one which matches best!

  7. Hi Ankita,

Need help on choosing the right shade for this concealer. I have been eyeing this concealer for long and Japan doesn’t seems to have this shade NC42. My skin tone is same as yours and all my foundation shades match that of yours. Do you know if the shade NW35 matches the NC42 shade? Or can you tell which shade of this concealer available in Japan matches your skin tone?
    Pls do reply.

  8. Hey!
Nice review! Do you use a finishing powder to set it? I use this concealer too but I have huge problems with it creasing!
    What do you suggest?

  9. hi ankita I have pretty dark pigmentation under my eyes slightly more of what u had I have already tried the lake absolute concealer but I think it dint work for me can you suggest me a good concealer
