Color generally doesn’t scare me but if its one shade that I find difficult to pull off – its a purple/violet lipstick! Unless they’re packed with a lot of pink/red undertones, purple lip colors tend to give me a dull, corpse-bride look. I’ve seen a lot of women, especially older women, wearing purple lipsticks and it gives them the same dull look. But with a few simple tricks, you can make purples work for you!
The lipstick I’m wearing here is Violet Crush by Estee Lauder. It is part of the Limited Edition Violet Underground collection (Fall 2012). Its a gorgeous intense violet lipstick with a bit of pink. The formula is very luxurious – rich pigment in a smooth, buttery soft formula and a feather light feel. (full review coming soon!).
How to wear a Purple/Violet Lipstick
1. Get flawless skin!
Conceal your under eyes properly, cover up any redness you might have. I have used Clinique Anti Blemish Solutions Liquid Makeup (no. 04 Golden Vanilla) for this look – it gives excellent coverage for blemished skin.
2. Keep the eyes soft and neutral!
Stick to liner and neutral eye shadows, don’t use too much kohl and skip going overly smokey. If you really want to experiment, use purple toned eye shadows/liners like I’ve used here. I’ve used the Clinique Eye shadow Quad in Plum Seduction along with Clarins kohl in Plum. Apply loads of Mascara!
3. Pop a bright candy pink blush on the cheeks!
This is the most important trick! To prevent the purple from washing you out, use the brightest pink blush you have! I have used Sleek blush in Flamingo here! Bright pink blushes give that doll-like look that balances out the corpse-bride look of a purple lipstick.
