How to wear Purple/Violet Lipstick : Tips & Tricks

Color generally doesn’t scare me but if its one shade that I find difficult to pull off – its a purple/violet lipstick! Unless they’re packed with a lot of pink/red undertones, purple lip colors tend to give me a dull, corpse-bride look. I’ve seen a lot of women, especially older women, wearing purple lipsticks and it gives them the same dull look. But with a few simple tricks, you can make purples work for you!

The lipstick I’m wearing here is Violet Crush by Estee Lauder. It is part of the Limited Edition Violet Underground collection (Fall 2012). Its a gorgeous intense violet lipstick with a bit of pink. The formula is very luxurious – rich pigment in a smooth, buttery soft formula and a feather light feel. (full review coming soon!).

1. Get flawless skin!

Conceal your under eyes properly, cover up any redness you might have. I have used Clinique Anti Blemish Solutions Liquid Makeup (no. 04 Golden Vanilla) for this look – it gives excellent coverage for blemished skin.

2. Keep the eyes soft and neutral!

Stick to liner and neutral eye shadows, don’t use too much kohl and skip going overly smokey. If you really want to experiment, use purple toned eye shadows/liners like I’ve used here. I’ve used the Clinique Eye shadow Quad in Plum Seduction along with Clarins kohl in Plum. Apply loads of Mascara!

3. Pop a bright candy pink blush on the cheeks!

This is the most important trick! To prevent the purple from washing you out, use the brightest pink blush you have! I have usedΒ Sleek blush in Flamingo here! Bright pink blushes give that doll-like look that balances out the corpse-bride look of a purple lipstick.

[note color=”#FFE4C4″]I had a tough time photographing this lipstick. I’ve edited the pictures a little bit to show the true color of the lipstick on the lips, I hope it shows up like that on your device/browser (different browsers/devices manage colors differently.)

I hope you found these tips useful! Have you ever tried Violet lipsticks? Share your comments below! [/note]

  1. Really helpful post…I have MAC Up The Amp which was a gift…and its just lying around coz I paired it with subtle pink blushes and neutral eyes…doll like blushes didn’t even come to my thank you so much for this idea πŸ™‚ Definitely gotta try πŸ˜‰

  2. I have man’s heroine and up.the amp both from the same family.and you’re right they’re tricky! But cos i loooove purple lippies πŸ™‚ btw you are gorgeous here πŸ™‚

  3. This is a beautiful colour…very different from all the other purples which always seem like they havew a tinge of grey in them. Ur earrings r very pretty too.
I love EL pure color lipsticks…their formulation and packaging are both so luxurious.

  4. wow!looked gorgeous! loved the earrings too. is it made of thread? i like violet and purple lipstick a lot. because i like to experiment with colors. it is fun!

    1. Yes they’re made of thread πŸ™‚ Got them from Queue Up. I’m glad to see someone experiments with Violets/purples!

  5. Very useful Ankita….actually i own MAC Up the Amp….MAC lipsticks are costlier here in Abu Dhabi, so i ordered some lipsticks online, i bought all the lipsticks by seeing swatches and review online, the lipsticks included Up the Amp, but after seeing the lipstick personally i became lil reluctant to try it….u have given very useful tips, lemme take my purple lipstick out and try…..

  6. Been a silent follower of your blog Ankita. This post finally elicited a comment cause I have never seen anyone this pretty with violet lipstick. The post on natural glowing makeup was awesome. Could you suggest alternate products for the natural look. Thanks.

    1. Hi Saumya,

For the natural glowing makeup, you can use any cream blush – NYX has good options like Rose Petal and Natural. If you have oily skin, stick to powder blushes, NYX powder blush in Mocha is a lovely shade for Indian skins. So is Lakme Absolute Day Blushes and MAC Fleur power.

As for highlighters, the Revlon and Colorbar ones are easily available.

For foundation, please see this post to pick the best foundation for your skin type –

  7. can u suggest any mac colour like this bcz I tried Rebel but it was really darkkkkkk. m nc40 so plz suggest any mac purple colour.thanks

  8. Gorgeous! this color suits you so much that I couldn’t resist to leave a comment. πŸ™‚

however, this doesn’t really look violet/purple, it’s more like a bright anime pink. Is it right or is it because of the lighting?

  9. You look drop-dead gorgeous, Ankita. And I just loved your ear-rings. Where do you get these from? πŸ™‚
I’ve tried Flamboyant Fuchsia from Faces Go Chic range, it’s not technically purple, but it’s quite close.

  10. Hi
