Hey everyone!

I’d always heard that beer as a last rinse is great for adding bounce and shine to hair. I never tried alcohol for hair though until recently with Park Avenue Beer Shampoo which is now available at departmental stores and medical shops across the country.

Price : Rs 160 for 200 ml

My take on the Product

The shampoo comes in a beer bottle-lookalike plastic bottle. I’m not too fond of the packaging, quirky though it is, as the cap doesn’t shut properly and leads to leakage if the bottle it not upright. The shampoo is dirty yellow in color, slightly runny and smells really bad! (alcohol scent). Since I generally follow up with a nice smelling conditioner, the alcohol smell doesn’t stay in my hair.

It lathers fairly well and washes off easily too. But you need quite a bit of quantity for it to lather properly. As for the claims of making the hair shiny and bouncy – it does add volume and shine to the hair. Not astronomically but in a degree that is noticeable. On the downside, it makes my hair really dry and I have to make sure to use a heavy duty conditioner after this. The hair feels rough to touch as well which is why I’ve switched back to my Sunsilk Keratinology Sun Kissed Shampoo. I wish it wasn’t quite so drying on my hair because I do like the shine it adds. But because of the dryness and frizzyness it imparts, you can’t really take advantage of the bounce. I definitely need some heat and serum to tame down and smoothen my hair while I use this so this shampoo has not really worked out great for me.

I know its something different and attractive so go ahead and give it a try. But if you have dry and frizzy hair like me, I won’t recommend it!

The GOOD about Park Avenue Beer Shampoo :

  1. Lathers well
  2. Washes off easily
  3. Does a good job of cleaning
  4. Adds some shine and a bit of bounce to the hair

The NOT-SO-GOOD about Park Avenue Beer Shampoo :

  1. Repulsive smell
  2. Dries the hair, makes it frizzy
  3. Makes the hair rough
  4. Bottle doesn’t shut tightly

Overall verdict

If you don’t have extremely dry or frizzy hair, you might like this shampoo. It does a decent job of cleaning and while it smells horrible and is drying, it does add some shine and bounce to the hair. As for people with dry/damaged hair, I’d recommend you steer clear of it but if you really want to try it, make sure to use a heavy duty conditioner along with it to combat the dryness and scent.

Rating : 2.5/5

Oh ! Oh ! I’ve ordered it already out of curiosity that it is a Beer Shampoo and Beer is said to have great properties for hair, anyways, I’ll give it a try and see if it works for me.

So beer just adds a temporary shine i suppose – being alcohol rich this wouldnt soften the hair :P

I’ve also being using this shampoo for over 2 weeks. i’ve noticed my hair to be silky and bouncy than usual, but totally agree with you about the drying part.

I used it recently but after oiling my hair. It did make them bouncy and soft. I hated the smell .. After reading your review I might not even think of using it without oiling my hair :/

i am using it n its working fine for me… though it leaves the hair dry but i like it tht way.. all conditioners weigh down my hair in 2-3 days so i usually skip those… but this is mild n woks really well.. i think it depends on hair texture ….
I too dislike the smell but tht doesn’t stay long after hair wash :)

I spotted this shampoo at a medical store last week, and was tempted to pick it up when I remembered you mentioning that a review is coming up quick on the blog. Thank Goodness I didn’t pick up the bottle, mainly because I’ll not be able to sustain the beer smell even for those 3-4 mins that I’d be washing my hair. It’s a skip-skip for me!

I did! The smell was overwhelming but thankfully didn’t linger or I’d have gone to work reeking of a good night’s party ;) It did make my hair bouncy and actually controlled the frizz too, so much so that I didn’t feel the need to use a conditioner! Of course I didn’t skip the conditioner but went easy on the serum later. Your experience is rather surprising since my hair is similar to yours
(Hell, even my skin is similar so I kinda always take your word for hair and skincare products.)
