My take on the product

e.l.f products have been made available in India for the first time by stylecraze.com and the moment I saw the update, I grabbed a few pieces before they went out of stock. One of my purchases is the Essentials lipstick in a pretty brick red shade Voodoo.

The lipstick comes in a rather cheap and flimsy packaging that shows all signs of breaking as soon as it slips out of your hands but these retail for $1 in the US so one cannot expect much for that price. The bullet swivels out with a lot of difficulty and it broke at its base the moment I swiped it on my lips. The texture is a little dry but not really very stiff, its just not very creamy. The pigmentation is quite good and its not difficult to apply when using a lip brush. The formula is semi-matte, non-staining, mildly moisturizing and doesn’t settle into lip lines. It stays on the lips for around 4 hours including meals and fades off significantly past the 4 hour mark. It did not bleed or feather as it wore and overall, the formula is quite decent, its just the packaging and the texture that spoil the experience!

The shade Voodoo is a pretty brick red shade that will look beautiful on dusky/warm/tanned skins. Its the kind of shade you can wear grocery shopping as well to a party and it would fit well in either situation! One doesn’t need to work to hard on the rest of the makeup with this shade, it looks nice even without any makeup on the eyes and face. I’m not a fan of the flimsy packaging but I would still recommend this shade to everyone looking for an understated red!

The GOOD about e.l.f. Essential Lipstick Voodoo :

  1. Good pigmentation
  2. Does not settle into lip lines
  3. Does not stain the lips
  4. Wears well for 4 hours including meals in between
  5. Does not feather/bleed outside the lip line
  6. Mildly moisturizing
  7. Easy to wear red shade
The NOT-SO-GOOD about e.l.f. Essential Lipstick Voodoo :
  1. Flimsy packaging
  2. Texture is dry and the bullet might break easily!
  3. Availability in India is subject to stocks at stylecraze.com

This is how it looks on me :

 Overall Verdict

e.l.f. Essential Lipstick Voodoo is a pretty brick red shade with a semi-matte finish that wears well for 4 hours without staining, bleeding or feathering. While the formula is good, the dry texture of the lipstick and the flimsy packaging is turn off. At $1, this is a pretty good bargain (just for the formula) but I wouldn’t repurchase this at Rs 269!

Rating : 3.5/5

Its definitely not so cheap for India, Avon’s Simply Pretty range is cheaper and much better!

Ohh no Mango Mania has a lot of peachy coral-ness that makes it much more vibrant!

I’ve tried ELF products – and used to swear by them. But as I branched out and tried higher end brands I kind of left them behind. Their studio brushes tend to be okay, (the more expensive, black ones) and I like their primer (or at least I did back when It was the only one i’d ever tried) but I’ve pretty much left their makeup by the wayside.

I think the Studio range is better, the Essential range is sadly not!
