Hey everyone!
While my Mondays will showcase Budget makeup, my Tuesdays are pledged to MAC! Every Tuesday from now onwards, there will be a MAC feature in this space – either a product review or a tutorial. Hope you are excited
I most certainly am!
Starting the first edition of MAC Tuesdays with MAC Mineralize eye shadow review of the shade Young Punk. This has been launched some time back and is part of the permanent collection for 2012. MAC changes the shades for the Mineralize permanent range every year.
Price : Rs 1350 for 2.2 g
What MAC says about the product :
Baked minerals refined into a powder formula provide exceptionally sheer and lightweight application. Colour builds lightly, layer after layer, without heavy coverage. Check out other shades on MAC website HERE.
My take on the product
MAC Mineralize eye shadows come in the regular MAC packaging with the black plastic and the transparent lid. The Mineralize eye shadows come with an additional small plastic cover (shown below) which I’ve found is really useful because they have some fall out during storage and handling and the additional cover really helps in keeping the packaging clean. Like all MAC products, it does not come with an applicator or mirror.
The eye shadow itself is a gorgeous melange of black, purple and silver. Most mineralize products are a visual treat and this is no exception! If you love purples, this one would be a tough one to resist! The texture is soft and smooth and the pigmentation is quite good. I had found some of the eye shadows from the Semi Precious collection dry/hard in texture and difficult to swatch but this one has a much much better texture. There is a little bit of fall out and the color doesn’t come out intense when these are used dry. I would recommend using it with a damp brush for easier application and better results. It blends very easily with just a touch of the brush when used dry but it sheers out a lot. Basically, these work best when just patted and pressed onto the lid. Too much blending just weakens the color. Coming to the staying power – I used it wet over bare lids (no primer) and the first signs of fading at the inner crease started after 4 hours of wear. After 6 hours of wear, there are definite creasing in the outer crease as well. If you have oily lids and want to wear these without a base of any kind, a primer is definitely required to cross 6 hours of wear without creasing.
The shade Young Punk :
While the formula is not as impressive as one would expect, the shade more than makes up for it! It is a gorgeous warm purple in a black base. The shimmer is mostly purple and pink and looks amazing under artificial lighting. I have taken these pictures under natural lighting so that effect is not quite visible here(I tried taking pictures with the flash but they didn’t focus well
) This would look great for an evening party where there is a lot of artificial lighting. The shimmer creates this focussed sparkle on the eyes that looks absolutely stunning! If you’re a bride-to-be who wants to try out something different from the usual gold/copper/bronze, this would be a gorgeous shade for one of the smaller functions!
When used dry, it looks like purple/pink shimmer suspended in a blackened base while when used wet, its like a high shimmer smoked purple. Mineralize eye shadows are not as easy to use compared to the regular eye shadows. Here are my tips on using these eye shadows -
- If using dry, do not apply these directly and try to blend! Instead do a basic black(or purple) smokey eye with regular matte eye shadows and then just pat the Mineralize eye shadow at the center of the lid using a Mineralize eye shadow brush (I use The Body Shop Mineralize eye shadow brush).
- If using wet, these can be used directly on the lid. The fall out is minimal, the color pops up really well and it is just easier to work with the formula when these are used wet. Apply the eye shadow using a wet brush all over the lid and soften the edges using another clean dry brush. For a more blended look, blend with a neutral/purple regular eye shadow in the crease.
The is pinker and more vibrant in person than how it appears below :
Here’s the look I created with Young Punk. I have used Young Punk with a wet brush all over the lid (without any base) and dry on the lower lash line. For the blending, I used Inglot eye shadow 446 Pearl using a clean dry brush to soften the color in the crease.
The GOOD about MAC Mineralize eye shadow Young Punk :
- Comes with an extra cover to prevent fall out during storage/handling
- Soft, smooth texture
- Good pigmentation
- Decent staying power without primer
- Shimmer is non-gritty and well integrated into the base
- No fall out when used wet
- Great shade for parties/editorials
The NOT-SO-GOOD about MAC Mineralize eye shadow Young Punk :
- Fall out, pigmentation and blending issues when used dry
- Staying power could have been better
Overall Verdict
MAC Mineralize eye shadow Young Punk is a melange of intense purple, pink shimmer in a blackened base that gives a gorgeous sparkle to the eyes when used wet. The texture is smooth and soft(which isn’t common with Mineralize eye shadows!), the pigmentation is good though the staying power could be better. It is a high sparkle eye shadow and is not the easiest formula to work with but I think it would be a fabulous shade for special occasions when you are ready to go the extra mile to create a stunning look!

I’m glad! You’ll do a good job with it..
Thanks Gauri!
pretty…
Thank u Nisha!
Really loved the shade, just its pricy! I liked the dry swatch too, wish it lasted longer without a primer!
The staying power could have been definitely better!
Not sure how I feel about mineral eyeshadows – the fallout, as you mentioned, tends to get pretty bad.
That and the average staying power are the only issues! But I still end up buying them cos I love the sparkle and finish!
Loved all the shades.. so vibrant..
Thanks Aarthi! Have you tried any Mineralize eye shadows?
