My take on the product
NYX Roll on Shimmer comes in a transparent tube packaging and contains a roller ball tip for applying the product. The packaging is quite sturdy (I have come across some very flimsy packaging from NYX! Yes I’m talking about the round lipsticks!) which is great but I’m in 2 minds about the roller ball tip. The product flows out smoothly as you roll the ball on your eyelids most of times but the few times when it doesn’t flow out smoothly, you need to apply a little pressure or keeping rolling it till the product comes out and that can be painful and uncomfortable since the application is on the eyes. Another option is to take out some product on your finger and then press it onto your lids but can be a little bit messy as it is a loose powder. I have found the best way is to directly use the product on the lids but as mentioned, the few times the product doesn’t flow out leads to an uncomfortable experience. The upside of this kind of packaging is that there can be no loose pigment mishaps involving spillage and flying pigment dust! The application is controlled and one can never end up with a very messy situation!
The powder itself is smooth, finely milled and doesn’t fly around when dispensed. It is not so loosely held that it gets messy, it has a bit of cohesion to it which makes application smooth for the most part. I would recommend using a primer with this because it is after all a loose shimmer product and may lead to a bit of shimmery fall out as it wears. I tested it with NYX HD eye shadow base underneath and I did not have any fallout issues during the wear. There may be a little bit of fallout during the application but it can be easily wiped/brushed off. The wear time is really good. I did notice very slight fading at my inner corner and inner crease after about 4 hours but there was no major creasing or fading apart from that for a solid 10 hours that I tested this product for. The pigmentation is good too though the color appears a bit different on the lids as compared to the tube and the swatch as well. Overall, formula-wise, it is a wonderful product for the price!
The shade Chestnut appears like a deep taupe-coffee brown on the arm (heavily swatched) but on the lids its more of a coppery brown. If you layer it really heavily, it might appear a little darker but still not as dark as it does on the arm. The shade is gorgeous and the shimmer is just right to make the eyes sparkle. It doesn’t look overly glittery or trashy and its the kind of shade that’ll flatter every skin tone. It is an effortless neutral, you don’t need another shade to make it work. Just roll on the product your eyes, soften the edges a bit with your ring finger, put on mascara and there’s your beautiful neutral eye! Looks great when paired with a bold lip color. You could also do a matte black/brown smokey eye and just dab the product in the centre of the lid for a metallic spark.
Not that it won’t suit others but I would definitely recommend this shade to warm toned/dusky/tanned beauties!
Here’s how it looks on me. I have used only this product on the lids over NYX HD eye shadow base :
The GOOD about NYX Roll On Shimmer Chestnut :
- Transparent tube, sturdy packaging
- Roll ball tip controls the amount of pigment coming out – no pigment mishaps
- Smooth, finely milled powder
- Goes on evenly and smooth (*mostly*)
- No fall out issues
- Shimmer is non-gritty
- Multi purpose product – can be used over face as well as body
- Wears very well (10 hours over primer)
- Very reasonably priced
- Beautiful shade range
The NOT-SO-GOOD about NYX Roll On Shimmer Chestnut :
- The roller ball tip doesn’t always give consistent application
- Unavailable in India, needs to be ordered online
- Needs to be used over a primer for best results (since its a loose powder)
NYX Roll On Shimmer Chestnut is coppery–brown shimmery pigment which is finely milled and goes on smooth on the lids to deliver an excellent staying power. The packaging is clever with a roller ball tip to control the product but can be a bit tricky at time if the product doesn’t flow out smooth. There are no major fall out issues with this product but its best to use it over a primer to prevent a shimmer fest in the under eye area! Overall, I like the concept and the formula, the roller ball definitely makes it much easier to use than the traditional jar packaging of pigments. The shade selection is quite good and Chestnut makes a great metallic neutral that’ll flatter many skin tones.
