Today I’m reviewing the latest in skin care from Lotus Herbals ~ the Daily Multifunction Sunblock SPF 70.
Price : Rs 495 for 60 gm
The Packaging :
The Lotus Herbals SPF 70 sunblock comes in the same orange flip-top plastic tube packaging as the other products in the Safe Sun range. I like the colored packaging though the flip top cap is not the best, it accumulates product over time. My tube has been in use for just more than a week and it has already developed some product goop!
The formula :
This sunblock is lightly yellow–beige tinted, has a lotion–y consistency and is infused with a mild refreshing fragrance. It spreads easily and absorbs with a bit of massage (not as quickly as the 3-in-1 matte SPF 40 from the same range). While I like the fragrance, the texture and the tint do not suit my skin. My skin is extremely oily these days and this sunscreen makes it very greasy and dull in about 1-1.5 hours post application even though it absorbs with a non-greasy finish initially. I think it would work well for dry/normal/combination skin types as its not a heavy product per se but I would not advise it for very oily skin types.
The second thing that puts me off this product is the tint. It is distinctly yellow tinted and the shade does not match with my undertone. I have beige undertone (neutral-leaning towards cool) and while the 3-in-1 matte SPF 40 matches my skin perfectly, this one makes it looks greyish (because of the undertone clash). It does leave a cast behind, I feel it would not brighten warm toned complexions with yellow/orange tones but I would not recommend this for those with neutral/pink undertones.
The only time I would not bother with this is if I was going for a beach outing or vacation when my priority is prolonged sun protection and not clashing undertones!
The SPF 70 Factor :
Coming to the SPF, a factor of 70 is great but not necessary for everyday unless you have a field job which exposes you heavily to the harsh sun. I think its a good option to go for if you are going swimming or on holiday where you’ll be spending a lot of time in the sun. Since its fairly water resistant, it will work well in the above situations. I would have recommended this to women with normal/dry/combination skin type but its an expensive product compared to other fairly well performing Lotus Herbals sunscreens and the high SPF is unnecessary for moderate sun exposure. I think its best for specific circumstances when some extra protection is needed.
The Claims :
The product has some tall claims like Anti-ageing benefits and anti-wrinkle effect but I can’t really evaluate those claims. If my Mum tried this one out and feels any difference, I will surely update this post with the results. It also claims skin lightening benefits but to test that I need to wear this for at least 3-4 weeks on a daily basis but since it makes my facial skin very dull greasy, I would not be able to test that. I can though test it on my arms which are quite tanned and update this post in time. I could have reviewed this product after testing it another 3-4 weeks but I wanted to give out an initial review because it did not work for my oily skin in terms of texture as well as tint. So if you any of your have very oily skin or are neutral beige/pink toned, I would recommend the 3-in-1 MATTE SPF 40 instead unless you need some heavy dose of sun protection for a special circumstance.
The GOOD about Lotus Herbals Safe Sun Daily Multi-Function Sunblock SPF 70 PA+++ :
- Spreads and absorbs easily
- Oil free, does not feel heavy on the skin
- Light refreshing fragrance
- Paraben free
- Lightly tinted to give a bit of brightening effect/coverage
- High sun protection : SPF 70 and PA +++
- Small quantity required for each application
- Water resistant
- Easily available
The NOT-SO-GOOD about Lotus Herbals Safe Sun Daily Multi-Function Sunblock SPF 70 PA+++ :
- Yellowish tint : unflattering on neutral/pink toned complexions
- Not suitable for oily skin, makes the skin look greasy and dull after some time of wear
- Expensive compared to other products by Lotus Herbals
Lotus Herbals Safe Sun Daily Multi-Function Sunblock SPF 70 PA+++ is an oil free, light yellow-beige tinted sunblock that absorbs quickly into the skin to give long lasting sun protection. It gives a bit of coverage but the tint may not suit neutral/pink toned complexions. The texture is light but not suited for oily skin. It is best suited for normal/dry/combination skinned people with extremely sun sensitive skin or for specific occasions where there is a lot sun exposure expected but for daily wear, I prefer the other sunscreens from Lotus Herbals which are easier on the pocket.
