My take on the product

I really like the L’oreal products I’ve tried so far and when I saw this product at the L’oreal counter, I couldn’t resist getting a feel of the product. Consistent with my L’oreal experience so far, this product doesn’t disappoint!

It comes in a transparent jar packaging with a black screw on lid. The packaging is sturdy and travel friendly. It comes housed in a cardboard packaging which has all the product info including complete ingredient list. Even though the packaging is jar type which has hygiene issues over pump/tube packaging, I like the fact that is transparent and one can always tell how much product is left.

The product itself is a light rose colored thick cream which is quite soft and smooth to touch. The feel of the product is silky and smooth and from that itself once can tell that it contains silicones. The consistency is thick but its not greasy or waxy. A very small amount is required for each application and the product transforms to a velvety smooth semi-matte texture after applying. It blends easily and absorbs quickly into the skin . It fills out the imperfections to quite an extent to give a smooth base for the makeup to go on.The product is safe for use on the eyelids too and once can use this as base for eyeshadows too.

I have noticed that my foundation goes on much smoother and I require lesser quantity when I use this primer. My face stays freshand glowing  all day and the foundation stays on much longer. The pores and imperfections appear diminished though not invisible as it claims. It doesn’t give an obvious glow like the NYX HD Photogenic Primer but it gives a soft subtle glow and a smoothness to the skin that can be felt as well as seen. I have oily acne prone skin and it has neither broken me out nor does it make my skin oily. I feel it has a mattifying effect without making the skin dry but I wouldn’t call it a mattifier product by itself. It does not leave a white cast behind so photographing self while wearing this would not be a problem.

Since a very small quantity is required in each application, this jar would last a long long time. One can use more product in the areas of imperfections like fine lines and pores and it minimizes them to a good extent. I feel the product would suit all skin types but since its not very moisturizing, dry skinned women should use a good moisturizer underneath.

It does what it claims, it a smoothing primer that makes the surface of the skin smoother and soft, an effect that stays for the entire day. Its not a magical product, but a great primer for those looking for a smoothening effect with a bit of glow. I find it very wearablein everyday wear as it doesn’t give a heavy or attention catching finish, just a smooth natural soft look.

The only con I can think of is that its loaded with silicones so women who are allergic would not be able to use this.

Overall Verdict

L’oreal Paris Base Magique Transforming Smoothing Primer is a light weight primer that transforms the skin to a smooth, soft canvas by filling the fine lines/pores. It does not leave a white cast and does not give a very obvious glow, just a very smooth finish with a natural soft glow. It makes the foundation last much longer and the face retains a fresh glowing look even after a full day of wear. It doesn’t make my combination/oily/acne prone skin oily or dry and did not break me out. It is loaded with silicones so women who are allergic should stay away from it but apart from that, its a great product! It is safe to use over the eyes and acts a good base for eye shadows too. A very small amount is needed for each application so this jar will last a few months easily.

If you’re looking for a smoothing primer that adds a soft natural glow, this is THE product for you!

Rating : 4.5/5

If someone has a nice skin to begin with is it necessary to use primer?

Its not necessary Ishita, is the person’s individual choice of course. Using a primer will basically help in making the makeup last longer so even someone with good skin would want that.

I just got a sample of this product 2days back in a mall, I am using dis product after tonning N moisturising my skin, It is really soft N silky N makes my skin level so that the foundation can gilde easily N looks natural but it doesn’t hide pores :(, I am planning to buy dis one since it’s cheap when compared to other primers like MAC or Clarin, Overall verdict would be if anybody doesn’t have 2 many skin imperfections can try dis 🙂

  12. August 1, 2012 / 2:30 pm

I recently changed my mind N bought revlon photo ready primers, Oh god i am disappointed very badly 🙁 I took the skin perfecting primer, it is a lotion so no creamy texture like loreal but as soon as I applied it on my face it got absorbed so quickly N when I applied concealer on it 🙁 It became patch N dry, This makes my skin so sdry N patchy 1200INR is really expensive, N for the INFO I had tonned N moisturised my skin quite well before primer but alas no use I have a combination skin but never expected revlon primer to be dis bad, I am going to the mall dis evening N will demand for an refund or exchange but I dont want dis primer, In fact the 2nd day I thought I will blend the concealer N primer together so that i don’t get the patchy dry look no use its the same but better than the 1st day. This primer would be really good for gals with 222222222 oily skin.

Is this better the revlon photoready perfecting primer..

    • July 22, 2014 / 4:06 pm

For oily skin, I prefer the revlon one as it's more mattifying.

I am totally new to primer. Loreal base magique primer or colorbar perfect match primer? Which is best in hiding open pores?

    • January 28, 2015 / 7:53 pm

The Colorbar one is better for hiding open pores. It gives a smoother base and fills up irregular parts of the skin surface.

Which primer is better…the colorbar one or the loreal base magique?

    • October 23, 2015 / 5:16 pm

I recommend Colorbar for normal to dry skin and Loreal Base magique for normal to oily.

    Hi Ankita

I always look up your reviews before buying anything (for last year). I bought this primer few months ago and worked like a dream the first 2 times , the overall make up finish was like a pro. But lately anything I apply over the primer – BB cream (diff brands) or concealer (diff brands) or my Loreal matte morphose foundation , all the products mixed together start flaking /getting removed from skin and produce a whitish residue. I wanted to know if I am doing something wrong and applying wrong. I wait few minutes after applying primer. I have tried with and without moisturiser. With an without different concealer a and foundation, same result unfortunately. Any ideas??

Hi, try using patting or dabbing motions to blend products over this. That should prevent the balling up of the product.
