Many women are under the misconception that if they have oily skin, they do not need moisturizer. The truth is, everyone needs moisturizer, you just need the texture and formula suited for your skin type! Moisture/Hydration is different from oil/sebum and if your skin is oily, it does imply that it is hydrated! Oily skinned women need to use light weight moisturizers in form of lotions or gel and should stay away from heavier creams which may log the pores and lead to pimples and blackheads. Oil free moisturizers absorb quickly into the skin leaving behind a clean non-greasy finish.

I was unaware about this for quite a long time and used to skip moisturizer. Acne problems led me to start reading up about skin care for oily skin and that is when I found out about CTM – Cleansing, Toning and Moisturizing! Within a few months of using an appropriate Cleanser, Toner and Moisturizer, I noticed a reduction in oiliness and acne and an overall glow in my skin which was lacking before. c

So today I’m sharing some of my favorite moisturizers for oily skin –

1. Lotus Herbals alphamoist oil free moisturizer (Rs 175 for 80 ml)

This is was my first moisturizer and very gentle and light weight. I have repurchased that since and recommended it to many readers too.

4. Lotus Herbals 3-in-1 matte daily sunscreen with SPF 40 (Rs 295 for 120 ml)

This is quite a popular product and loved by all skin types! It could break you out if you have oily/sensitive skin. Best recommended for combination skin type or for winters. Reviewed HERE.

  1. Will check out the very first one first. Should be easier to find as well. lakme honey avocado one was good for me in winter (rather the dry winter months, we dont really have a winter) but the peach one broke me out.

    1. I’m liking the Lakme honey avocado one too though I don’t need it in Mumbai, it was really useful when I was at home for Diwali. Do check out Lotus alphamoist.

  2. I have the Neutrogena Oil free moisturizer, Lotus Herbals 3-in-1 matte daily sunscreen with SPF 40 , Lotus Herbals whiteglow microemulsion.Of these i love the micro emulsion one.. Will definitely try Lotus Herbals alphamoist oil free moisturizer in the future..
Thanks a lot for this post ankita!

  3. These are not only the best moistureizers for oily skin but combination skin too. Moreover, if ur skin gets oily using these products just dab on or brush some talcum powder, it will work wonders n keep u oil free for next 3-4 hours.

    1. Dabbing compact is the best practice Razia but talcum powder can actually block pores and lead to pimples. It has happened with me in the past. One should stick to non-comodogenic compacts especially oily skinned women.

  4. hi ankita.nice post..i have been following your blog religiously but was running out of patience to type….i do skip the moisturizing part
but wil give it a thot

    1. I can’t believe I did not mention Lacto Calamine. I’ve used it a lot earlier too! Will add that to the post. Glad you’re liking the micro emulsion!

  5. i have used lotus 3 in 1
    microemulsion
    oriflame aloe cream

      1. yeah 🙁 its been the worst of it ever
i have been prescribed keracnyl facewash (has been reviewed on IMBB)
        keracnyl cream
        acinin face pack
        facelin a gel
        kojic cream by curatio
been 25 days since i am applying these..but my skin has dried up completely
its a BIG vicious circle 🙁

  6. I use Clinique Anti blemish solutions oil free moisturiser its amazing.. Do try that out. so light on skin and very apt for sensitive acne prone skin. I have also used Clinique Dramatically diff moisturising gel. no prod can be better thn Clinique when it comes to moisturisation on oily skin

    1. Hi Sandhya, unfortunately pore size is hereditary and you cannot do much to reduce their size. The only thing you can do is keep them clean because when there are dirt/oil deposits stuck in the pores, it makes them look bigger and more prominent. Use a gentle scrub 2-3 times a week, I’d recommend Clean and Clear daily scrub or Neutrogena deep clean scrub.

As for skin brightening, you can try the Lakme Perfect Radiance 4-week intense brightening treatment, I have reviewed it here –

  8. Ankita, what are your thoughts on Sebamed clear skin gel? Have you ever tried it? I have an oily and acne prone skin.. Planning to try Sebamed.

  9. Hi Ankita,
A very nice post indeed. I need ur help since u hv used both d moisturisers that I hv chosen for summers to buy next. I hv combination skin (towards dry) & want to know –
Which of the 2 is better – Lotus whiteglow Microemulsion or d Alphamoist lotion, – for summers as a day moisturiser for everyday purpose, indoors, since I use proper sunscreen outside?
    I m wheatish complexioned & i want the hydration, dewy look & d glow.
Pls reply. I want to decide which one to buy. And ur advice will be useful 🙂

  10. hi ankita , i have oily skin which is acne prone … i am confused abt choosing facewash whether to buy lancome or clinique … wat would u suggest…

    1. Hi, sorry I haven't tried Face washes from Lancome or Clinique. You could try either The Body Shop Tea Tree face wash or Neutrogena Oil Free Acne Wash. Both work well for oily acne prone skin.
