5 makeup must-haves for teens and college girls : My picks and recommendations

Hi everyone!

Late teens and college is the time where most of us start experimenting with makeup! It is always good to start with a few basic items like tinted lip balms and pencil liners and slowly graduate to lipsticks/blushes depending on how comfortable you are wearing them. Besides being simple and easy to use, college makeup-must haves should also be pocket-friendly!

Being a college student myself, despite my *love* for makeup, I like to keep my college look simple and fresh. A hint of color on the lips and eyes and some tinted sunscreen and compact to even out skin and take care of oiliness is all I need on most days.

Here are my top 5 makeup recommendations for teens and college going girls.

5 makeup must-haves for teens and college girls

5 makeup must-haves for teens and college girls

[smartads]

1. Tinted moisturizer/Sunscreen

2 Cardinal rules –

  1. No matter what you skin type, age, profession- always use a moisturizer suited to your skin type.
  2. Never ever forget your sunscreen and sunblock!!

At this age, you don’t need to cake your skin with foundation for everyday basis. A tinted moisturizer with SPF or a sunscreen is just enough to give the right look to your skin.

My picks –

  1. Lotus Herbals 3-in-1 matte sunscreen SPF 40 (Rs 175)
  2. Oriflame very me peach tinted moisturizer ( Rs 279- can be picked up for lesser on offer)
  3. Ponds Tinted moisturizer (Rs 215)
  4. Biotique bio redwood tinted moisturizer (Rs 299)

2. CompactΒ

A pressed powder or compact sets the moisturizer and keeps it in place longer. It also helps in oil control and keeps the face look fresh and shine free longer. Must have for oily skinned beauties. Β Also, it can be easily carried for touch ups during the day.

My picks –

  1. Maybelline whitestay UV compact (Rs 150)
  2. Avon simply pretty pressed powder (Rs 115- 179)
  3. Lakme pure radiance compact (Rs 150)
  4. Lotus herbals pure radiance compact (Rs 275)
  5. Lakme Rose powder (Rs 90)

3. Pencil eye liners

Perfect to define, contour and line eyes – pencil form allows easier and faster application than liquid and gel liners. Colored liners add a nice touch to the face and are girly and fun.

My picks –

  1. Bourjois kohl and contour pencils (Rs 240)
  2. Faces long wear eye liners (Rs 249)
  3. Avon glimmersticks eye liners (between Rs 189- 249)
  4. Colorbar I-glide eye pencils (Rs 325)

4. Tinted lip balm/ lip gloss

Personally I feel that if I had to choose just 1 must-have, it would be lip product. It instantly adds freshness and color to the face! For college wear, just a tint of color is enough. Tinted lip balms or lip gloss gives a hint of color with a bit of shine and gloss to keep the look fresh. Can be carried along for touch ups during the day.

My picks –

  1. Nivea Fruity Shine lip balms (cult favorite! Rs 139)
  2. Maybelline color sensational lip gloss (Rs 250)
  3. Lakme lip love tinted lip conditioner (Rs 225)
  4. Avon glazewear lip gloss (Rs 145-Rs 329)
  5. Lotus Herbals seduction lip gloss (Rs 225)

5. Mascara

And lastly, the highly underrated magic wand- the mascara!! After my compact (for my oily skin!), lip balm/gloss, my third makeup must have for everyday is Mascara. It gives definition and a more fresh, awake look to the eyes (we all need in the morning right πŸ˜› )

My picks –

  1. Avon super curlacious mascaraΒ (Rs 299)
  2. Maybelline define-a-lash mascara (Rs 315)
  3. Maybelline colossal volume mascara (Rs 275)
  4. Lotus Herbals maxlash botanical mascaraΒ (Rs 245)

πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ Lakme Rose powder and Lotus herbals compacts are nice. Some people really like the Maybelline and Lakme ones too but I’ve not used them. Lotus herbals botanical one is also reallly good- priced at Rs 375 approx (red one in pic)

Hey Ankita!! I love ur blog and dedication u put in it :)…i want to know whether these eye pencils are waterline safe??? cos i wear lens and i dont want these to transfer on them…can u suggest some waterline safe eyeliners which r longlasting?? πŸ™‚

    • Corallista

Thank you so much Nands πŸ™‚ ! Most waterproof eye pencils are not waterline safe, only kohls or gel liners from MAC, Inglot are. Lakme Absolute Ultimate kohl and Maybelline Colossal kajal lasts quite well though the Maybelline one may irritate sensitive eyes. If you’re willing to invest, you should try MAC or Inglot gel liners, they stay on well on the waterline. Btw I wear lenses too and sometimes kohl transfers while removing but it can be easily washed off with solution, haven’t placed any problems with that so far.

thanks πŸ™‚ btw the new lakme silk eyeliner stings badly when used on the waterline ..i was almost blind for 1 week while using them and then it struck to me that it was the eyepencil that was irritating my lens :(…i nevr had such probs with previous version of this liner..

Hi, I might sound stupid asking this but won’t applying a sunscrren and moisture together cause harm to the skin? I have really sensitive skin.. and I’m new to this and dont know what to apply first.. the former or the latter?

Sunscreen is the last step of the skin care routine so apply it after moisturizer. It wont harm your skin, in fact it’ll help!

    Hi Ankita,
I know this post is like 2 yrs old but cdnt help commenting on it. I just happened to bump onto it while searching for something & I just want to say that this is such a useful review for college going ppl who are still figuring out what’s good – what’s not, what is essential & what is needed to look good?
It’s a very thoughtful post, very helpful & very right as well. I just wish I had such a good advice when I was in college :).

    Heyyy Ankita!!
I’ve a very bizarre issue, no matter which Kohl I use I usually smudge it in no time. I’ve used Lakme Eyeconic, Maybelliene Colossal but, in vain! Any suggestions about that? And do the Nivea Fruity Lip Balm add any colour to the lips or are their nude bcoz I heard a friend saying so.

    • June 24, 2014 / 1:35 pm

Hi, I'd recommend the Lakme Absolute Ultimate Kohl – its smudgeproof! The Nivea Fruity Lip Balm in darker shades like Pomegranate does add color to the lips!
