Mattify! Cosmetics Original Powder for combination skin Review, Swatch and Photos

Hi everyone!

As an oily skinned girl, I’m always on the lookout for the products that give me a shine-free matte look. I recently came across reviews for a US based brand called MATTIFY! COSMETICS on many blogs and decided to try out their loose mineral powders that guarantee the best  oil control for oily skin.

Today I’m reviewing Mattify! cosmetics loose mineral powder : Original powder for combination skin(click to view product on website)

Price: $7.99 (around Rs 400 approx)

Quantity : 30 gm

What Mattify! says about the product :

Stop your oily T-Zone with this translucent oil absorbing powder. Gives oil control where you need it without drying out your skin.

Why mess around with oil-blotting sheets and touch ups with cakey colored powders?  Let your base cosmetics do the work for you! Whether you need a little bit of oil control or a lot, Mattify! Cosmetics provide adjustable oil absorption, depending on how you apply them.

The entire line of Mattify! Transparent Powder  can be worn four different ways:

  •  Alone to minimize redness, pores & acne, while also absorbing oil
  • Before foundation as primer to prevent acne & protect pores from makeup
  • After foundation to create an airbrushed poreless finish and help makeup last
  • BEFORE and AFTER foundation for maximum oil absorption and skin clarity

My take on the product :

I have sensitive acne prone oily skin which is combination in winters and super oily rest of the year. The high humidity levels of Mumbai especially in the monsoon makes touch ups very frequent and necessary to remain presentable for me. I mostly use very light moisturizers and mattifying sunscreen but despite that most compacts give me only 1-2 hours of oil free finish after which I need to blot my T-zone with a tissue or touch up with compact.

My biggest expectation from MATTIFY! Cosmetics loose mineral powder was oil control for at least 3-4 hours which is exactly what it delivered.

Packaging: The product comes in a transparent round jar with a black plastic screw on lid. A sifter placed inside the jar regulated the amount of product that comes out. The design is simple and easy to use and the product doesn’t fly around when you open the lid.

Texture and formula : The powder is translucent powder that appears white in the jar but melts into the skin when blended giving  a transparent finish. The powder particles are very finely milled and its blends like a dream. Sometime my face is  a little moist/oily when I touch up with it but it never sticks to the wet areas and blends evenly. It does not get patchy or get uneven. Despite being colorless, it evens out my skin tone giving a matte yet not too cakey look. You can layer this powder and apply a LOT of quantity and still it doesn’t give a cakey/dry look. I like the fact that after using this, my face looks clean and oil free, never too matte or cakey/dry.

Fragrance: It smells faintly starchy which is probably due to presence of corn starch. You need a fluffy brush to apply since its a loose powder .I use The Body Shop face and body brush to apply this.

I generally use this product before and after foundation as directed and it typically gives me 3-4 hours of oil control which is better than the compacts I’ve used to far. It is exactly as claimed for very oily skin. I’m sure in lesser humid conditions it would give longer oil control.  This product has become a staple in my everyday makeup routine now and I’m looking forward to trying out their ULTRA! powder for very oily skin.

The GOOD about Mattify! Cosmetics original powder for combination skin –

  1. Sturdy, clean packaging- loose powder housed well, doesn’t fly around on opening the lid.
  2. Transparent powder- will suit all skin tones.
  3. Powder is finely milled and blends like a dream.
  4. Gives even finish to the skin- oil free , clean and matte.
  5. Gives oil control for very oily skin up to 4 hours (will work longer for combination skin).
  6. Did not break my skin out or irritate it in any way.
  7. Reasonably priced for 30 gm of great product.
The NOT-SO-GOOD about Mattify! Cosmetics original powder for combination skin –
  1. It doesn’t really give pore-less finish as claimed (Frankly, nothing can!)
  2. It does even out the tone- but doesn’t really  minimize acne.
  3. Hassle of online ordering!

Overall Verdict :  Its a fabulous product for oily/combination skinned women looking for oil control. The powder is finely milled, blends wonderfully to give an even finish to the skin and controls oil for upto 4 hours for very oily skin- which is exactly as claimed. It would give longer oil control for combination skin types. It gives a very clean matte finish to the skin, no dryness, sticking to patches or cakey look- no matter how much product you apply. It is the best product for oil control I have used so far.

Highly recommended for combination/oily skinned women.

    1. Great! I’ve wanted to read a review of that product since some time 🙂 These Mattify ones are quite good though and very nicely priced too!

  1. Reasonably priced! I have moderately oily skin in summer (thats cos of aging, it was very oily earlier) and normal skin during the monsoons. Mattifying is very important for me as well. Still ordering online is the hard part.

  2. I so wanted to see this review! Thanks Ankita…I am definitely going to try to get my hands on these..but yeah i need to order them online 🙁

  3. Nice review, Ankita. I use MAC Blot powder most of the time in this humid weather. This seems a good product too.

  4. I am 28 years old but I do not have wrinkles (the last time I checked that is!) I have combination skin, oily on the tzones, dry cheeks. I chose Made from Earth Vitamin Enhanced Face Firming Serum because of the good reviews I saw from different online sites. They say it is easier to prevent wrinkles than actually curing them when you get it. I wash my face first before putting the serum.

I have used the Vitamin Enhanced Face Firming Serum for almost two weeks and I have not experienced any rashes, breakouts or red spots. I have no complaints at all. I would use their Vitamin Enhanced Moisturizer also but I think I have to finish up my Oil of Olay stash first. I will definitely use more Made from Earth products.
