Hi everyone!
Few days back I did a tutorial on how to do a dramatic black smokey eye. Today I’m doing a tutorial on how to do a wearable brown smokey eye. This is a very simple look and can be paired with any outfit, for any occasion and takes 10-12 minutes to do. All you need is a smudgy brown pencil liner , some matte brown eye shadow and a smudging and blending brush!
TUTORIAL :
Step 1 : Conceal
Apply concealer under the eyes and on the lids also especially at the corners where there is more pigmentation. I have used MAC Select moisture cover NC 45.5.
Step 2: Prime
Next, apply primer. You could skip this step as the concealer will also act as primer but for longer wear and oilier lids, it is better to prime also especially while doing smokey looks as they can get messy. I have used BeYu eye base.
Step 3: Line your eyes with a smudgy brown pencil liner.
- Apply on water line.
- Apply on upper lash line keeping it as close to the lash line as possible.
-Create a small wing at the outer corner along a line joining the outer corner and the end of the brow as shown.
Step 4: Apply the brown pencil liner all over the lid.
This will act as a base for the eye shadow to stick on- it will make it last longer and also give a smokey effect. Always always always use a smudged liner underneath for a smokey eye look- it makes is simpler and effective. Since I want the look to be soft, I have used brown instead of black. For a bolder, dramatic look, use black pencil liner instead of brown.
-Start by drawing a line along the crease starting from outer corner, proceeding outwards as shown.
- Join it with the end of the wing created earlier.
-We have now created a outline, now just fill it in with short horizontal strokes. Use short strokes because they ensure even application and are also gentler on the eye.
Step 5: Smudge and soften the edges of the liner applied.
The essence of a smokey eye lies in the soft, smudged look. Using a smudging brush or any brush with dense short bristles, lightly start smudging the liner applied in the previous step using small gentle strokes.
Step 6 : Apply brown eye shadow
Apply a matte brown eye shadow using patting motion on the entire lid. To get the color evenly till the crease, apply with horizontal patting motion in the crease as shown.
Step 7 : Apply dark brown on lower lash line
Now using a small dense brush brush, apply the brown eyeshadow on the lower lash line, decreasing the amount as you go towards the inner corner. Make sure to apply it maintaining the small ‘V’ shape at the outer corner, merging it with the upper lash line eye shadow shape.
Step 8 : Blend
It is very important to blend in a smokey eye. Using feathery light strokes, blend the color in the crease using a soft fluffy brush, You could use a lighter matte eyeshadow or compact powder to blend. I have used the lid color from Maybelline chait latte quad. Use a to and fro motion in the crease for blending.
Do NOT rub the brush in the crease otherwise you’ll end up wiping the dark eye shadow from the crease.

Step 9: Apply highlight shade on brow bone/inner corner.
I have used highlight shade from Maybelline chai latte quad.
Step 10: Apply lots of volumizing mascara and you are done!
I have paired this look with nude lips using Maybelline color sensational ‘My Mahogany’ and also with coral lips using MAC Lipglass ‘Lychee Luxe’

Hi Ankita.. The kohl and contour in Brun expressive and Bourjois contour clubbing in Brown vibes both r diff shades no? now am confused which one to go for to achieve a brown smoky look like this!
Go for the eye pencil ‘Brun expressif’ Ishita. The clubbing liner is a liquid liner and is not easy to work with for a smokey look. At best it can be smudged to give eyeshadow like look but not smokey.
that luks beautiful n truly wearable and i loooovee browns but just one issue, somehow they just dont show on my lids..is it bcos i have dark circle or i should be using more concelor ?
Hi Sangs,
Browns look great on our skin tones but most of us face this problem. You need to conceal your lids and under eye area properly as well as prime your lids so that the color of the eye shadow shows up. After applying a good coverage concealer, dab some loose powder on it to set it and then apply the eye shadow on it. Or you can use a base like MAC Paint pot or MAC Paint on eye lid that’ll neutralize the pigmentation and also help the eye shadow show up well. Hope this helps
