How to do dramatic black smokey eyes : Step-wise Photo tutorial and FOTD

Hi everyone!

Smokey eyes are always in vogue and today I’m doing a simple tutorial on how to do a dramatic black smokey eye look.

Tutorial :

Step 1 : Prime

Prime your lids and lower lash line with an eye primer/base. Priming is important for smokey eye since a lot of eyeshadow/kohl is used and if it doesn’t stay put, the look can look very messy.  I am using BeYu eye base. Read review HERE.

Step 2 : Conceal

This step can also be done after the eye makeup to prevent spoiling the under eye with any fall out but it requires much more precision to not end up smudging the eye shadow on the lower lash line while applying concealer after the completed eye makeup. Since I’m using a good eye shadow with almost no fall out, I am doing the concealer first.  I am using MAC Select moisture cover concealer.

Step 3 : Line your eyes with kohl

Apply lots of kohl on the waterline and apply the same on the upper lash line and wing it out towards the brow. This wing will act as a directive for the  step where we apply kohl all over the lid. I am using MAC Smolder eye kohl.

Step 4: Before proceeding further, dab some loose powder/compact on under eye and lid area to set the concealer. I am using Chambor silver shadow compact.

Step 5: This is the most important step for a smokey eye. Apply kohl all over the lid using the wing created earlier as a directive for the outer corner. The wing in effect marks the ‘boundary’ i.e that is till where we fill in the kohl.

Step 6: Using a brush, smudge the edges of the kohl applied in the previous step. I have used MAC 217 brush.

Step 7 : Pat some black matte eye shadow all over the lid as shown. I am using black matte eyeshadow from Coastal Scents 88 original palette

Step 8: Apply the black eye shadow on outer corner and  lower lash line too.

Step 9: Using a blending brush blend the eyeshadow at the crease and outer corner. For blending, use loose powder or compact to make it easier. Pick up the powder on the brush, tap off the excess on the back of your palm and then use it to blend otherwise too much compact powder will dilute the intensity of the eye shadow. I am using MAC 222 brush for blending.

Step 10: Clean up any excess in the inner corner and outer corner. I have wiped it clean using tissue wetted with cleanser.

Step 11 : After the wet wiping, use a dry tissue and just ‘dab’ at the outer corner to absorb any extra liquid and to further soften the edge since we don’t need any harsh edges or lines in a smokey eye look. I am extending it outwards for a dramatic winged look. You can keep the wing smaller if you like.

Step 12: Apply compact or a skin colored matte eye shadow under brow bone, fill in your brows with dark brown eyeshadow, curl eye lashes and apply mascara and you’re done!

I have used dark brown eye shadow (marked #2 in image) to fill in my brows.

Thank you Anam 🙂 Glad you find the tutorial useful! I’m guessing you’re looking for a party look..I’d suggest a softly smoked silvery grey eye look paired with pink lipstick. I’d do the look and put it up if you like 🙂

Thank you Shweta! 🙂 Lipstick suggestions-
Maybelline colorsensational : Make me Pink, Pink Petal, Plaza Pink and Warm me up are light shades in the pink family.
Maybelline Moisture extreme range: Buff (coral), Coral Pink (coral pink shade)

From Lakme enrich satin range : 131 (Fantasy collection)

Haven’t tried Colorbar lipstick much but if you like frosty shades then the matte lipstick has a shade ‘Sugar sugar’ which is a medium bright pink. Another pretty shade is ‘Irish rose’ but its a mid tone pink not a light one.
      Hope this helps 🙂
